|
|
Hello all... I was wonderering if anyone could answer the following... i rarely need the sat nav (once a month or less) but i always need to know where speed cameras are,,, so if i bought a mid range unit like a garmin could i put it in the glove box and install a power socket in the glove box and install a remote antenna.. would the sat nav start up automatically when the ignition was on and therefore would the camera database start to sound warnings etc ..that i could hear from within the glove box. when i do need the sat nav to find an address i could use it then as normal..
thanks

I know when i turn the ignition on in my car it automatically turnes my TT on and the same when i turn the ignition off it turns the TT off and when the TT turns on it goes straight to the map and therefor warn you of any Speed Cams near you so all that is possible and it wont be too hard to run the power wire and the external antenna wire (if needed) into the glovebox so all this is possible with a TomTom but i dont agree leaving the unit in the car overnight but that is just me . Dont know about a garmin though as i have never had one. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

Most modern devices may even work without an external antenna whilst in the glove-box. But, current TomTom's won't auto switch-on when external power is applied. They will auto off but not On.
It's also difficult to say if you would hear the warnings. Is it worth all the hassle when you could just affix to the windscreen and remove as necessary? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I have to disagree with this Darren as my GO 710 when sitting in the Dock (In Off Position) comes on as soon as i turn the ignition on. I can only talk about the x10 though maybe that has changed since then. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

Is your 710 running the latest firmware? They disabled Auto-On in a firmware release on the x10's. It's not an option at all on the x20's. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes everything is up to date as per my signature below, To be honest i cant remember how i set it up but it is one of those things that i have always noticed being there. I will look into the set up of it later and report back as i have to go to a breakdown on the motorway. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

Darren, I think it was the auto-OFF they disabled, to overcome the dodgy early mounts. Mine always powered up with the ignition (but it did die before App v7.xxx). I also had the unofficial power down when ignition switched off (it doesn't work with x20s, but they have that from within preferences). _________________ Dennis

From what I've read, it's only the x10 models where (for some unknown reason) the auto-on still works, even with v7 software. |

thanks for the input chaps . i was told that garmin did the auto on /off ... any garmin owners out there? it may sound a bit daft wanting the sat running out of view / glove box but if during my work day i call at maybe 6 or seven sites it seems a pain to have a routine of fixing to the screen every half an hour or so just so i can have speed cam warnings. any advice more than welcome ..
thanks again
