Has anyone found a way of backing up their WM device throught Vista? As Vista doesn't support AtiveSync any more, there is no obvious way to do a system backup using a Vista machine.

Thanks,

Ian

Bizarrely, there is no backup facility in Vistas Windows Sync or Windows Mobile Device Center. Vista's Windows Mobile device support has some big holes in it compared to XP/ActiveSync - and ActiveSync is incompatible with Vista.

I guess a third party solution is what I'm going to have to settle with - assuming one exists?

For back up I still use Sprite as you can store the backup on the memory card and should you have to reset the device while away from the PC everything is reinstalled very quickly (just a few taps of the stylus) - check it out Here - Mike

Sprite does look good. I will probably use that on my Vistal laptop. Worst case scenario, I suppose my laptop and my PDA could be lost at the same time, so maybe a backup on my desktop (which is still XP) might be a good failsafe. I could install ActiveSync there. Only thing is that I haven't had much luck in restoring from ActiveSync in the past - has anyone successfully done this? I even read some cynics suggesting it doesn't actually work?

Ian

PS Really pleased so far with the HTC TyTn II - very fast GPS, with some tweaks, the phone and PDA functionality is highly effective. The well-documented video driver issue is annoying but not critical.

If you use Sprite Backup it has the option to backup to a memory card or to your PC.

Well worth the outlay IMHO.

The important bit for me with Sprite is the Self-Extracting Backup Files - Restore backups without re-installing from the PC. This means if the PDA has a disaster while I am out on the road for a few days I can recover the device back to full working status with everything back on it in minutes WITHOUT needing the PC.

WM5 and 6 don't lose information when/ if the battery goes flat, but the need to hard reset to recover the device can catch you out if not prepared, and you can always guarantee this will only happen at the most inopportune time - Mike
