X970 GPS unit or mount/holder fault ?

Noticed about a week or two ago that the voice instructions where getting cut short, like "at the roundabout, follow the......", after that, the unit started turning itself off, well at least that's what I thought. In fact it turns out that the battery was empty. Having taken the unit off the holder with the power cord directly attached to it solved both the sound loss and the discharged battery problem.
I have had a close look at the mount and all the spring mounted contacts are clean and moving freely, having put back the unit on the mount and jiggling it a bit while playing an MP3 track didn't produce much movement as it's held firmly into position but didn't make any difference, the sound and power only seems to get through intermittently regardless of the "jiggling".
Although I use it every day of the week, I woudn't say that it's had a hard life as it generally stays in the vehicle for the all day (it's rarely left unattended !)
I am thinking about contacting ViaMichelin as it's still under warranty but I'm really not looking forward to have to send them the whole lot as I drive for a living and have got to rely heavily on it to find addresses around the country. As anyone got any experience on their lead time times for repairs/replacement ?
