It seems like TT are having big problems, the support site has just been shutdown.

They have taken too much on and under estimated the demand. To many new products at the same time, and very little testing both on the product & web site front.

The order tracking stuff is still up if you have a saved URL for your order (which is a support.tomtom.com URL). It's the main part of the support site that's down - URLs that begin tt-uk.custhelp.com.

I think it's important to get the upgrade situation in perspective. TomTom said all along that they knew they were going to be deluged with orders, and that they expected it would take them some time to ship them all. There have been some glitches early on (lack of SSL on the payment page being one), also the way that the system creates an order then makes you pay for it, which leaves you stuck if the payment goes wrong.

However, simply saying "they have taken too much on" is, in my opinion, an over-reaction. There aren't lots of new products - in essence, all that is very new at the moment is Navigator 3 and all the map sets. The Palm version has been out for a couple of months and seems, by all accounts, to be quite stable.

Navigator 2 had a few bugs to start with - but I started out with version 2.02 and found it wasn't bad at all. 2.05 followed fairly quickly and solved a lot more bugs. On the whole, TomTom have a fairly good reputation for solving program related problems - though their communication with users is often not the greatest. There is a listed problem with 3.01 and the iPAQ 2210 - but I'm sure there'll be a fix before long (for upgrade customers, they still have Navigator 2 to use if they feel they need this fix). Anyone buying any new software of any significance should expect bugs. Some are more spectacular than others - like the infamous TomTom Navigator 2 map (wasn't it Sweden?) that told you to drive on the wrong side of the road...

Nothing that is 'down' on the web site front at the moment really has anything to do with the upgrade programme for Navigator 2 users. I suspect temporarily closing the ability to order a Navigator 2 to Navigator 3 upgrade is simply to avoid too much of a backlog.

I suspect that, assuming there have been no last minute hold-ups, the upgrades that have been successfully ordered and paid for will begin to ship over the next few days, clearing the backlog. This will hopefully open up capacity to sort out the orders that went wrong and allow those who haven't yet had a chance to order their upgrade to place their order.
