|
|
Have TTN6 running on WM5 on an iPaq 4705.
Every month or so, TT erases all my favorite destinations! The file is just gone. So I start over and rebuild my list, but after a month or so it erases them again.
Yesterday I needed TT so I turned on the Ipaq, started TomTom, and it said there are No Maps! Indeed all the TomTom directories had actually been erased from the SD card. Anyone else seen this? |

I know that if you do a search you'll find that this problem has occured before...not too sure what the answer was, or if there was one. I now regularly back up every thing and have a spare SD card loaded .... 'just in case,' having lost everything while away last Christmas...most annoying at the time, but it hasn't happened since. |

Ya, I had done a search, but couldn't find anything about it erasing Favorites. |

Favs, recent destinations and other settings are kept in the MapSettings.cfg file in the map folder. So you could back that up to your PC.
This file is written out by the TT software e.g. at the end of a journey and when you quit the application.
So could be a problem with the card or the card driver.
If you haven't already. 1st try another reputable card of reasonable speed |

Hi,
Completely losing the map files does sound rather like a faulty card or PDA, but "vanishing" favorites, etc. is not uncommon. If TomTom can't see the .cfg file when it starts, it creates a new (empty) one. Maybe the PDA hadn't finished booting when you started TT, or the card had been removed?
But you only need to occasionally copy the .cfg file to any other folder on the PDA. Then if the favorites disappear, you only have to copy the .cfg file back into the map folder (this is also a method for deleting recent destinations). For the above reason, some people recommend keeping favorites in the form of POIs.

Thanks guys.
I've found that my maps had not been erased but had just disappeared from Winduhs for some reason. Now they're back.
But several times I've had my MapSettings.cfg get actually erased. This is very annoying. Ya, I have a copy set aside now, but this should not happen.
I've begun exiting TomTom before I turn off the PDA, and this hasn't happened yet. Any idea why it erases MapSettings.cfg? |

You must exit TomTom prior to switching off the PDA, if the application is writiing to the .cfg file when you turn off the PDA it has every posibility that it will corupt the file, then the PDA cannot see it. Net result is TomTom starts up again, cannot read the corrupt file so it creates a new one - bye bye settiings, favs etc.
Keep a copy of the cfg file on the device and you can allways copy it back to where it should be complete with all your settings - Mike |

Makes sense Mike. But the On/Off is a soft control, and it's the OS that actually wraps things up and then allows shutdown. This is one of those things it should take care of. (outstanding writes)
I asked TomTom about this cfg corruption, and they've heard of it before. They say the problem is TomTom6 is NOT COMPATIBLE with the iPaq 4700! Ergh. So:
1. Ostensibly this does not happen on devices on the compatibility list; and
2. I am ostensibly lucky that it runs at all.
Yeah, I am soo lucky... |

Had this problem if you look at MapSettings.cfg file properties i found mine to be read only, i was unable to uncheck the box on the device so I copied to pc unchecked box saved the pasted back to pda (delete the original file first or read only will check again)
Hope this helps all |
