|
|
Evening All,
Just a quick question for you:
Does anybody know if it is possible to feed the display from an in-car SatNav unit like a Garmin or TomTom onto a separate display?
My car stereo has a built-in 7" LCD screen and I would therefore like to connect it up to a SatNav unit (which would live out-of-sight in the glovebox), but still be able to see the SatNav's feed on my car stereo display.
Surely this must be possible!
If so, how would I do it and what SatNav units would work?
Many thanks

Don't know of any off-the-shelve units that do it.
You could rig up a solution using a PDA based solution ( eg TomTom Navigator / iGo) and a VGA CF card to drive your screen - but the big problem is that you need to interact with the sat nav (acknowledge warnings etc) and if it's locked away in your glove compartment that's going to be tricky. _________________ Phil |

I'm not aware of any portable units that can do this. There are some systems from Kenwood, Alpine etc that can drive multiple displays so passengers can see a moving map in headrest mounted screens etc.
I-Go were demonstrating a black box GPS solution that would plug-in to factory fit displays such as you have. Basically it was a self-contained GPS solution that tapped into the car display and was operated by a remote control. A neat idea as it meant you could easily upgrade an ageing system and you could take it with you when you changed cars.
However it still hasn't seen the light of day and I can't see any mention of it on their web-site now. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Navman did one - the iDN3000 (I think). Had a box in the boot and a DIN radio/display. I think it needed the Navman head unitto enter enter data into it? I believe it's now discontinued.
None of the portable units have video output, it would defeat the purpose of making it portable. |

I did consider this once because I have a 7" LCD that is not used and the only way i could see it being done relatively easy was by using a laptop and using the VGA output to the TV, and possibly using Autoroute or another routing software on the laptop with an external gps reciever, unforunately the laptop would have to reasonably accesable because of not have touchscreen feedback on the TV, needless to say i didnt follow it through. |
