|
|
I bought a TomTom1 UK&RoI yesterday. It worked splendidly for a short trial. Then I downloaded the map, speed camera etc. updates - and now it doesn't work at all. All I have is an orange screen and a flashing cross.
What can I do please? (Other thantry to take it back!)

Try pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds, then see if it will power up - Mike |

Thanks Mike. I had already tried that without success, but I have done it again and still no joy. The thing powers up but then i just get an orange screen with a picture of a TomTom 1, ther words TomTom ONE and a flashing cross. Tapping the screen does nothing. |

Do you have a full backup of the device? - if so I would try installing that - Mike |

No. I don't have a back up. Why would I have? |

Uh because you updated it and now its not working. If you had a backup you would have a rescue option. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The easy option for you is to take it back, or you could try the following:
1/ Connect the device to the PC, exit TomTom Home if it starts
2/ Using Windows Explorer locate the TomTom unit, it will have its own drive letter and the TT icon adjacent to it.
3/ Open the drive using Windows Explorer.
4/ What will be listed now are about 20 folders and around 19 files, delete the files (NO NOT TOUCH THE FOLDERS) and leave the following files in place:
anitheft.bmp
splash.bmp
5/ Start TomTom Home on the PC and command it to check for updates, this should download the latest software version and install it for you.
6/ Once complete disconnect from the PC and re-boot the device, it should now work.
&/ Back up the device, this is the stock advice we offer to anyone who has purchased a TomTom, there are no copies of map data etc on any CD/ DVD the device is shipped with so the only copy of the data is on the actual device FAQ #1 explains how to do this, the FAQ page can be found Here - which ever option you go for, replacement or recovery (if it works) please back up the device before doing anything else with it - Mike |

Yes, thanks Darren - and the retrospectoscope is a wonderful thing. But I followed the instructions I think to the letter, and nothing was said about the need to back up before downloading the updates. In fact I don't recall that I read anything to suggest it was even possible to make a back up.
Anyway, my question is, having made that mistake, what can I do now? |

Read my post above (I suspect we posted at the same time), the choice of two options is outlined - Mike |

Sorry my reply was a sarcastic response to your 'I don't have a back up. Why would I have?' statement for which I apologise. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thank you Darren. Apology accepted.
And thank you Mike. I tried what you suggested but to no avail so I took the easy way out and took it back for an exchange - done with no problem.
And I have now backed up the replacement...!!! |

I had all them problems with my tt1. Did exactly as stated, didnt work. Tomtom sent email with exactly same instructions didnt work. So swapped for a garmin 350 which has had no problems so far.
I didnt go for another TT1 as it went wrong on 1 it can do exactly the same on another. When i updated maps after making a back up, it came back with error stating Map/software incompatible to your device or words to that effect.
