|
|
A few weeks ago TomTom announced that they are making a bid to buy Tele Atlas. This has caused quite a stir in the SatNav industry. Last week I met a lot of GPS executives at the Canalys Navigation Forum in Barcelona, including Alain De Taeye the CEO of Tele Atlas. I asked a number of questions and will be preparing a report in the next few days.
As there were no senior management representatives from TomTom I have arranged for a PocketGPSWorld.com delegation to meet TomTom management this coming Monday. If you have a question about the acquisition that you would like us to put to TomTom please post a reply below. If you prefer to remain anonymous then you can email me (mike at pocketgpsworld.com) with your question.
Please keep questions relevant to the proposed acquisition of Tele Atlas as this is the brief for the meeting and I will not be discussing other issues. _________________ Mike Barrett |

with tomtom aquiring telatlas does this mean that HGV specific routing on tomtom product could soon be a reality. also could this extra data involve wieght limit avoidance as well as height limit infomation. also will this lead to more frequent map updates. will this affect of satnav manufacturers that currently use teleatlas mapping data

Will TeleAtlas maps and updates continue to be available for GPS manufacturers other than TomTom?
Will TomTom improve the TeleAtlas update/error correction process in order not to leave users feeling that their input has gone ignored? _________________ Andy

mapshare was initially brought in to benefit tomtom users only, how will the acquisition of teleatlas affect this? will the mapshare 'fixes' be available to other manufacturers or will the 2 companies stay totally separate? in other words, will tomtom customers be reluctant to pay extra for the v7 units to help out navman users?

I think its safe to assume that TomTom wouldn't wish to damage TeleAtlas's existing customer base, that would be a very expensive mistake!
But, how do they envisage TeleAtlas operating post acquisition? If they plan to operate TA as an independent what were the reasons that made them purchase? Cheaper map data, more control over mapping in general? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Will the acquisition of TeleAtlas mean that published map data will be more up-to-date and accurate than before?
Are there any plans to correct the wildly inaccurate speed limit data contained within the maps?
Will data provided through MapShare be made available through new versions of maps? |

Will Tele Atlas continue to add new countries to its list of mapped areas? Or will it revisit existing mapped areas to improve the state of the mapping information?
There are some parts of Western Europe that Tele Atlas has never mapped, even though Tele Atlas has been regularly asked to do so for the last 5 years! I’m talking about the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey). When (if ever) will Tele Atlas map the Channel Islands?

I asked TA this very Q at the Navman launch and was told 'watch this space'. Read into that what you will but my take on it was they're coming soon. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Will you be making the outcome of this meeting public or is the information still classified as confidential by TomTom/TeleAtlas? _________________ Andy

I certainly will be publishing an article about it in the very near future. I still have a few more people to talk to first though.
None of the information given to me is confidential so you will be learning everything that I know. _________________ Mike Barrett |
