Houston....we have a problem......

In an effort to be prepared for our upcoming roadtrip I bought another SD card so that I ould restore my original one to its purchased state.

The new card loaded up fine using my current configuration ( speedcams etc )

I used "Home" for this.

Then I was using "Home" to restore the original card back to its purchased state and I keep getting this message.

"An error has occured: western_europe.mid"

I can no longer restore to that backup. Any ideas why?

I tried several times all with the same effect.

Make a copy using windows explorer, and copy it to your new card, Number 1, here,

No specific ideas why, but this is yet another of the many, many reports of "Home" messing up when it tries to restore one of it's own backups.
That is why it is recommended that you make your backups using ordinary copy and paste methods using Windows Explorer NOT Home.
Instructions are in the #1 spot in the FAQs HERE

I'd suggest you do another backup straight away using that method.

If you are reasonably computer literate, you should be able to restore the problem backup using this technique too (all you have to do is find the folder where Home put it!) and then replace the .mid file with the one from your working version. But don't even think of trying this until you have a backup you know you can trust.

Any idea what that .mid file does?

Judging by the number of references to BitTorrent, file "sharing", pirating sites you get if you put "western_europe.mid" into Google, I suspect it is part of the anti-piracy map activation system. Probably has an encrypted version of the activation code or something similar.

Close. It comes with the map and is not changed by activation.
It is used along with the activation code to generate the access file unique to the device.

AAAAARRRRRGH!

I just bought some DVD's so I can store the back ups on disk and it wont work.

Windows encountered a problem while copying this file.

Any ideas as to what I should do now?

weird.......

The files copy fine without the DVD in the drive but as soon as I put one in......nope.

I do have a DVD writer and have used it before. Is it the DVD's?

Can these files be written to disk?

How are you doing this? - the reliable method is to copy the entire contents of the card to the PC using WINDOWS EXPLORER, put the files/ folders into a single folder on your PC desktop.
Next use the CD/ DVD creation software to burn that folder to the disk - do not try copying straight from the SD to a DVD it probably cannot access the data fast enough - Mike

it could be any number of reasons, but the files should copy onto disk, try it again with another DVD but I seldom see problems with disks these days - Mike

The use Windows Explorer, or any other DVD writer software to create your DVD copy - DO NOT USE HOME for any part of this process, as you have found it doesn't always work as expected - Mike

Yes my TT is fine.

The backup to restore it to its original state seems to be corrupt?

SO...I now have 2 cards that function, but both with cameras and POI's on it. The original backup is lost for good I guess:(

Oh well, I guess I can just delete the cameras and Poi's to get it to a "nearly original" state.

Im just peeved because I was planning on selling my TT before returning to Canada!

I really need back ups on disk though as I will be without my PC soon ( sold)

Just do that Explorer backup now and see if that will burn to the DVD-ROM.
If all you are worried about is not having a "day one" backup, that's of limited importance. You can manually delete all the bits you've added when you want to sell it.
