The Vatican has issued Ten Commandments for motorists:

Have the authors witnessed the Italian driving standards?

Or is it because they have witnessed such behaviour that they're trying to introduce a little divine inspiration?

I have and they are actually quite good. It looks erratic because they drive differently (more aggressively) but there i actually felt safer in Rome than London.

For example at a crossing pedestrians just walk out in Rome and the traffic stops - the drivers know this. In London even if you have the "Green Man" you never know if someone will stop or not.

There's very little shouting or beeping in Rome compared to London.

I preferred my taxi journey in Rome over the one in London. It was faster but i felt the other drivers all worked together to make the traffic system work. In London everyone seems to be out for themselves.

Never saw an accident in Rome either.

Whilst they state that "1.2 million people die each year on the roads" this is world wide and doesn't mention the number or % that die in Italy. It's just the Church asking people to slow down and be more courteous. The fact it comes from Italy has no bearing on their driving skills. If it had come from the head of the Church of England would you have said the same about the UK driving standard?

My experience of Italian driving is obviously different to yours.

..and crossing the road as a pedestrian:

a green light means you might get knocked down

an amber light means you'll probably get knocked down

a red light means you will get knocked down

My favourite commandment is "thou shalt not make rude gestures behind the steering wheel"...does this mean it's OK for your passengers to make such gestures, or it's OK if you move from behind the steering wheel or even get out of the car to make them Laughing

Definitely not true. How many people did you see getting knocked down then?

As for zebra crossing type crossings each time i stepped out the traffic stopped. Not just one car all of them until we'd crossed the road. No problems or rudeness.

OK, a slight exageration, but motorists definitely did not stop regardless of the light colour - they just navigated around pedestrians with varying speeds.

...and driving in Rome at rush hour is definitely an experience I wouldn't like to repeat too often Wink

I think this is the key to stress free driving abroad, I don't drive like I do in the UK, I adapt to the driving style of the country I am in.

And although it can look hectic at times they do seem to get the job done, I haven't witnessed one case of road rage in all my travels as yet, cars will cut across me to exit a motorway and I just carry on and don't even think about it because thats what they do, it's not personal Wink

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" so they say.

I agree with what you're both saying and out of the cities, driving is quite a relaxed experience - but rush hour driving is a whole different ball game.

The Europeans have a must better approach to multi-lane roads and use them correctly - stay in the nearside lane, pull out to overtake, then pull straight back in...how simple, yet why does that not work on our motorways?

I just loved the comment

It says that automobiles can be "an occasion of sin" - particularly when they are used for dangerous overtaking or for prostitution.

So we are not just talking about driving... Laughing
