Australia/New Zealand maps

I'm off to NZ and Aus for about 4 months at the end of this year, and have started planning. I presume that I can buy the Australia maps and load them onto a fresh card (with OS) on my One V2. However, AFAIK, there is no NZ mapping. Given that I will have to buy a satnav with NZ mapping, is it worthwhile ignoring Tom Tom and buying Aus mapping on the new satnav, or is the TT so superior that I should stick with TT for Aus, and use something else just for NZ?

TomTom get their Australian map data from Whereis, a division of Sensis. Notes on their NZ coverage can be found here: http://poweredby.whereis.com/content.aspx?PageID=287

They also offer some form of PDA/cell phone nav service which may be the most cost-effective way for you to proceed.

I would start looking for similar forums based in OZ. I'm sure you can find one with lots of relevant information; just use the www.sensis.com.au search engine.

Also, depending on your exchange rate, I'd advise making all electronics purchases prior to your departure to OZ; I found things to be very expensive compared to what I would have paid in the US.

It does seem odd that both TomTom and Mio use Sensis for their Australian coverage, but do not include NZ in that map. You might be wise to call their Customer Support in Sydney (couldn't find a phone number on TomTom's website; you'll have to search the Sydney yellow pages) to find out if the NZ map is available for your TomTom somehow.

Top three things you MUST do while in Australia:
1: Spend at least a week in Cairns. Spend a day or two up north in the rainforest, one day on the plateau to the west, and the rest of the time either snorkeling on the GBR (Reef Magic offer great tours at reasonable prices) or taking a learn-to-dive course on Fitzroy Island. If you like to bike, stop by The Bikeman and talk to my mate, Jay.
2: Fly to Alice Springs and rent a camper-van. Drive out to Uluru (Ayer's Rock), stopping to hike King's Canyon on the way. Take time to visit Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) as well; I actually thought they were more interesting than Uluru. If you don't have the 3-5 days to do this, you can fly right into Ayer's Rock and rent a car there, skipping King's Canyon.
3. Drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne west along the coast. See the Twelve Apostles at sunrise, then continue west to Loch Ard Gorge.

Easy no-brainers: Go to the Sydney Aquarium and walk across the Harbor Bridge.

Thanks for the advice. Interestingly, in the Maps page of Tom Tom website, the introduction says that they have mapping for Australia. However, when you click on the "buy maps" link, there are none listed for sale. I've e-mailed tomtom to ask if they are now available.

Got a reply from Tom Tom. The gist of it is that although the Australia map is mentioned in the preamble, they have removed it from the shop. They hope it will be available in the future, but can't give a date, and don't say why it was removed from the website. Crying or Very sad

thebinman, as you are well aware, the discussion of or sharing of map data that is covered by copyright is not welcomed on this website.

As your post aroused our suspicions I have been looking through your PM's. As a consequence we are now aware that you have been discussing the sharing of pirated map data and providing links to the same for some time now.

As this is a clear breach of our membership policy we have taken the decision to revoke your membership of this website with immediate effect.

The PM Messaging System is monitored and archived, should anyone else think it a good idea to spend their time sharing pirated software please think again.

As the moderators know, I'm not interested in pirate software. If I buy a map, I do so from a legitimate source. I'll always go for a bargain if it's around, but only in accordance with the EULA. So if any more of you feel like offering me dodgy software, or pointing me at a download site, please don't bother.
