Can you solve this please? Last week I had to go by car to Thames Ditton Surrey from Edinburgh . According to my father in law the best route would be to go on to M8/ M74/M6/M1/M25. However the unit took me via a country route via a place called Biggar. I have checked the "avoidances" and Fastest route is ticked and traffic unticked. This is as supplied, eventually I arrived on the M6/M1.

All went well until I was at the end of the M1 when it should have taken me on to the M25. Instead of that it took me a long winded way around to Thames Ditton via Watford past the Royal Airforce Station at Northolt then via Heathrow, Hampton Court then Thames Ditton. Even if I had possibly taken a wrong turn I am surprised that it did not reconfigure back to it's original route.

Any help appreciated is this the norm for this unit?

Thank you

Regards

Certainly I would not expect a brand new unit out of the box to go this route, but the unit is likely to learn your average speeds on different road types, and may have felt with your driving style that this route would be quicker, based on it's knowledge.

Certainly, I can understand the route from Edinburgh via Biggar, although the M25 diversion seems a little excessive.

Most units do not recalculate the whole route, they simply calculate the fastest way to get back onto the prescribed route, although many Garmin units do have a complete recalculate function which happens in the background.

As the unit got you to the correct location, it's difficult to complain too much about the route it's taken, even if sub-optimal (you could, for example, have ignored it's suggestions and followed your father's route until near the end).

I've used the A702 through Biggar to Edinburgh from the M6 many times, perfectly good direct route, quite enjoy it!! It may be a 'country route' but its a scottish 'A' road, and the best they've got!!

The road is quite nice in daytime except it added about 40 minutes to the journey. And at night it's pitch Black and very bendy and dangerous in places.
