Posted elsewhere but hopefully get a reply here.

Why is the latest USA/Canada v665.1293 nearly 1.5Gb when the previous v660.1215 was under 1Gb?

Anyone know (apart from TomTom of course) who I couldn't be arsed to ask.

I did ask TomTom......their reply

".....However there is no difference in the map version excepting for internal purposes.
The maps are exactly the same street for street lake for lake.
For internal purposes the map must be marked differently and changing the numbers makes a lot more sense to our internal developers than a whole string of words."

I cant say

Sorry, hit the submit by mistake above before I finished.

Was going to say that I remain unconvinced as the DVD version .1293 is 50% bigger filesize.

I can only assume that .1215 has less detailing, as long as the roads mapping is identical I guess that is the most important thing.

The new map upgrade offered to North American owners came on a DVD with 2 maps. One was just under 1 GB (so it would fit on the TT ONE's 1 GB card). The other map was larger, about the size mentioned in the first post of this thread.

TomTom says that the maps are identical. The difference is in the number of POIs.

It's not just the POI file that's smaller:

cline.dat: 514mb vs. 740mb
cname.dat: 114mb vs. 158mb
cnode.dat: 175mb vs. 209mb
faces.dat: 46mb vs. 178mb
cphoneme.dat: n/a vs. 22mb

Presumably, the maps are produced from the same Tele Atlas dataset, but use different compression techniques. I would guess that the two maps provide identical routing and guidance, but the larger one might have better display properties, such as smoother curves, or possibly a more thorough alternate name database. Just guessing though.

Obviously, there's no need for the cphoneme.dat file in the smaller map, as it's designed for SD-based units without the TTS function. I've no idea what the faces.dat file is for. Anyone?
