I have a Go 910, after receiving a notification from TomTom that a new software version is available, I followed their istructuions, went to TomTom Home to download and could not. After contacting TomTom support, this is the message I got back
"Dear Mr xxxxxxxx Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
With reference to your e-mail, please delete TOMTOM HOME from your PC and then uninstall your anti-virus's and firewalls. once you have done that, reinstall TOMTOM HOME from our website. This will allow you to download the latest software version".
Am I correct in thinking that if I follow this advice, I will on accessing the web to download the new version, be inundated with viruses and malware? |

Great advice as ever from TT tech. support there. NOT!
Downright scandalous telling you to uninstall your antivirus and firewall. Notice they didn't even bother to tell you to put them back afterwards!
As Tony says, disabling them temporarily should do fine. |

Thanks Tony,
I think I'll do a full system backup to my external hard drive first and then follow your suggestion. |

Thanks also Andy, I must say I like TomTom (I have a 910 and Navigator 6 on my PDA) but their support is atrocious. On a different topic, I have seen references on other sites to downloading camera locations and other software from non-TomTo suppliers to my 910, I niaively assumed I could only download from TomTom, are the downloads safe/useful? |

You can download and install the camera POI files from this site if you want more up to date, accurate speed camera locations - you can also configure the camera locations for true spoken warnings (not possible with the TT offering) - they work a treat, there are a number of guides to download and installing the camera POI files, for the 910 have a read of This page, the same instructions also apply to your other devices, just ignore the bit about Text To Speech (TTS).
Have you actually logged out the PDA from TomTom Home on the PC, running multiple devices with the Home software is great fun (not) - Mike |

Very bad advice! You don't need to do anything yourself to pick up a virus. There are servers worldwide scanning the internet all the time for unprotected computers, and the average time to be infected if you go on line without firewall/anti-virus is only a few minutes!
I once bought a new PC and installed Norton anti-virus from a CD. I then went to the Norton site to download the latest update. It took me about 10 minutes, and I was infected with 3 viruses before I had finished downloading! It took me about a day to get rid of them

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice, FYI; I used to use Norton and McAfee anti-virus software but still picked up viruses, trojans and other malware. I now use a suite of anti-virus utilities including AVG, Spybot S&D, Spyware blaster, Ad-Aware SE and Windows Defender. I also run Trend Micro's Housecall once a month. So far my PC is clear and it costs me nothing (apart from the odd voluntary contribution to charity). |
