Sorry to keep posting so many topics but I have just bought a Garmin 1240 sat nav and am using it as a travel guide (the navigation features are secondary to me as my car has sat nav built in). I just want a quality portable device that can store loads of extra POIs that I download and customise, categorise etc. I want to be able to browse map easily and click on POIs that are on the map. The Garmin I have is pants - it keeps displaying a bubble that locks the screen so I can't have a look at any other POI (unless I'm doing something stupid).
Also another limitation with the Garmin is that POIs added later goes into a separate list and won't display alongside the built-in POIs. I want to be able to categorise them properly.
I don't want fancy navigation just quality maps, display and it's compact.
Can anyone suggest any decent makes to go for ?
Also I'm not really sure what the pedestrian mode on the Garmin is for. Unless it for calculating how long it wil take to walk to a place. |

That's exactly what it is for. Also bear in mind pedestrians can often take routes cars can't.
As for brands see your 2nd thread and how POIs display on TomTom. Your Custom POIs will mix with the built in POIs although the built in ones are so inaccurate that i never bother them and just use the POIs from PGPSW.
You can also try TomToms in many Currys Digital (ex-Dixons) stores. |

Also, if you get a TomTom Live model, you get Google Search thrown in (subscription after an initial trial) - you can (well, I did last week) search for Fish and Chips near you for example, then choose to navigate to it. The XL Live models are restricted by not having an expansion SD card slot. The GO x40 Live models have SD card slots which will take at least 16GB SDHC Cards - not that you'll ever get anywhere near that volume with POIs. POIs are stored inside the map folder on the device, NOT in a separate location (so a huge SDHC card could not be used to have zillions available - you'd have to copy the map to it, then the POIs into that map folder. Most people use large SDHC cards to carry music and photos). Halfords and Comet also have on display "Try Me" TomTom models. _________________ Dennis
