Hi,
I've chanced upon some gsm/gps tracking device in the market like Trimtrac from Trimble. These devices output data in strings format via GSM to a mobile phone as SMS.
I wonder how difficult will the integration be if I use a PDA Mobile Phone (like HP Ipaq rw6828) to receive the string and break down them into useful information like the date, time, lat, longt, speed, heading...and present the info using the installed maps.
It may mean something like having a Garmin Que (with locality map) installed and the tracking device sends string data to the mobile PDA phone via GSM & SMS. The Garmin Que software opens up & shows you the location of the tracking device after decoding the received string.
Has anyone seen anything similar ? I'm really venturing into this ! Please enlighten me if you can. TIA !

You could pull the important information from the SMS text mesage in software running on your PPC based phone, then create a text line that is the same as the NMEA data stream that comes from a GPS device, but make the actual data from the SMS appear in the correct places in the text string:
Save this code to the memory card as a logXYZ.nmea (all the above should be automatic in a standalone application on the PPC Phone) then use Fransons GPS Gate software on the PDA to open the log file, play and loop continuous, open up your mapping application on the same PDA phone and it will display the position on the map (note there are other lines of code from the GPS receiver that you would also need to create - but this is simple string parse, string assembly and file save - I might have a go at something to do the above when I get chance.
In theory it will show the positon using any GPS based software capable of running on a PPC (TomTom, Memory Map etc)
Do you know what the exact text SMS message consists of - also have a read of This you could get the application on the Pocket PC based phone to send the text message to generate the position request - Mike
I had spent some time playing with Trimtrac from Trimble. The SMS sent by these devices are usually unformatted and fixed length. Have to parse the full string, break them into different pieces of data in order to make out the info, which is similar to the display screen of the PDA in the Ontrack device review.
