Nuvi 610T and Trafficmaster

I've just got myself a Nuvi 610 with the TMC module (which I think is TrafficMaster-based). It seems to work well most of the time but often I have a lot of problems getting a signal no matter where I put the antenna in the car.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a simple solution? Do I need an external aerial or something?

I have been playing with the hidden screens and trying different orientations of the aerial and whatnot. My signal level varies from 7 to 24 and once it's locked in it's usually in the 30-40s.

I think I would like some way of hooking it into the car aerial just because the additional dangly wire really detracts from the elegance of the device in my opinion.
