Any one interested in obtaining maps for tomtom South Africa, will have to get on a plane, travel to South Africa. Then buy a TomTom Go 510 that includes Maps of South Africa on SD card.
Tomtom refuse to release maps on SD card or make maps available for download.
This is the exact e-mail they sent me
" Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
The map of South Africa is ONLY available with the GO510 South Africa. Therefore it is NOT possible to purchase the map on either SD card or a download as it is ONLY possible for purchase with the before-mentioned TomTom.
With Best Regards
The TomTom Customer Support Team"
I do Hope TomTom change their minds about this crazy policy of only selling maps bundled with a new device. I know its a new product that has just been launched. But the maps are complete. and are found in every go unit they sell in South Africa. How hard can it be to make the map available for online purchase?  |

That's a question you should ask Sensis (the map provider) I am sure they want to keep the lid on.

Sensis...? never heard of them!
Navteq already have digital maps, and have done so for a very long time.
TomTom are already using Navteq data on other existing devices. So You've got to wander why they've not gone to Navteq & have chosen another map provider instead.
Suppose Sensis must be the cheaper (possibly not as well mapped?) option. and hence TomToms preferred choice for map provider 
I've E-mailed TomTom South Africa and when I asked about providers this was the reply
** " The maps are supplied by MapIT and cover approximately 30% of the country with a biannual update. The maps are very detailed with regard to metropolitan areas and major and secondary roads. Coverage even extends to areas like Soweto and smaller areas and towns such as Rustenburg and Nelspruit"
Either way, sounds to me like a pretty poor show from TomTom and possibly underpins their reluctance to sell these maps to the general public.
But this of coarse is just wild speculation on my un-informed part.
But I would love TomTom to prove me wrong by releasing these maps!

yes, sorry, MapIT. Sensis is for Australia. The problem is the same though.
