Why was I so surprised it worked?

I don't use my Nuvi 310d much but on Saturday morning with family in tow and a 5am wake up behing me , I set off on the journey from Brighton up to Sheffield to see my folks. I took a look at the traffic info just before setting off and saw J17 on M25 closed and I think M25 itself closed clockwise with 2 miles of stationary traffic. As I got to junction of M23/M25, the nuvi tried to take me anti clockwise up to junction with M1 but in my sleep deprived state I ignored it thinking it had gone mad. It was only when I'd been going clockwise for 10 minutes with it furiously trying to get me to turn around at every junction I passed (ignored of course), that I remembered the M25 was closed. Starting to sweat a bit at this point, with the wife giving me menacing looks, I explained that I now remembered the M25 was shut but not to worry, the nuvi would sort it all out. And it did. Took me off at J15 and put me back on after J17 and the problems, with a lovely clear road (no traffic because it was all queued up at J17).
I know those who use it regularly probably have this happen all the time but I just couldn't believe how well it worked. Even the wife, who I had to beg to let me buy it and hated it after it took her into a jam on the M25, has changed her tune.
