Hi everyone.

I bought TT3 for my PDA a couple of weeks ago and it's been trouble free and I'm very pleased with it. So pleased in fact, that I was demonstrating it to my boss... he liked it too, so he bought one also. It arrived yesterday and he was desparate to get it working. He tried installing it, but ran into difficulty and has asked me to rescue the situation...

This post concerns my bosses iPaq h1940, TomTom3 and a Fortuna clip-on Bluetooth GPS.

The sequence of events is like this:

- Boss installs TomTom3 = ok.
- He then installed the UK map onto his storage card = ok.
- Then he tried to connect to the GPS via Bluetooth = problem.
His iPaq didn't seem to like the GPS, it could see it, but not connect.
- He says that he entered his product code and got the activation key from ttcode.com and it all seemed ok.

- He decided to update the ROM on his iPaq from 1.00 to 1.10 = ok. The hope was that this would fix the Bluetooth problem.

- Having flashed the iPaq he needed to reinstall TomTom3. And here's where the problems really start.
- Setup runs, install [english, voice, gps]
- Then it says 'Activation Failed!'

- Go online to activate? Y/N
If you say 'N' it carries on preparing setup and then says that it's an Unknown Device Architecture and Cannot Connect to Device. It offers the option to Retry, but this has no effect.

If you say 'Y' to go online, it immediately comes back with 'Activation Failed' again. If I press 'Y' again, there's a long wait (about 10 mins) with nothing on the screen at all... then it eventually comes back with a the Windows File Transfer type window. Unfortunately, it still doesn't appear to do anything at all. We've left it there for about an hour, with no indication that anything is actually happening.

- Thinking it might be a ROM problem, I reflashed him back to the original 1.00 ROM on the iPaq. Re-running TT3 setup produces exactly the same results as above.

I have tried ringing TT support (20min+ wait - I'm busy with other things too!) and I'm having problems accessing their support website (I wonder if there are problems with the activation servers also...? I can't register for an account, it says it already exists, but it doesn't!)

Anyone got any ideas???? I'm stuck!

Ivan.

You seem to have two unrelated problems. One witht he BT connection and the other with the activation.

For the BT problem, make sure the receiver and the iPAQ talk to each other before you install TomTom Navigator. Use other GPS tools like Crux_View to verify the operation of the receiver.

Please note that you should update both TomTom and the GPS driver to at least version 3.03 - you don't need the CD for that, just get it from the marvelous TomTom Support site.

Hi lbendlin - thanks for the quick response...

The BT problem seems to be fixed - I think he didn't enter the correct passcode.

However, the activation thing really has me stumped... it just seems to sit there without doing anything.

For anyone else who experiences the same problem, here's what I did to fix it:

- Remove the MMC card (which had the maps still on it)

- Hard reset the iPaq (Power button and Reset button at the same time)

- Install TT3 with the iPaq connected to the PC as a Guest (i.e. before setting up a new partnership again)

This worked straight away - no error messages, waiting or long pauses as had previously occurred.

It did, obviously, ask for the Authorization Code again.

Once TT3 was installed, I reinserted the MMC card - confirmed it all worked.

Finally, I reset the iPaq's identity and allowed it to sync with the desktop PC again to regain all the mail/calendar data.

Sorted. Phew!!

Ivan.
