Hi guys , after reading for a fortnight I am none the wiser...
Anyone got experience of both and made a good choice?

snippets I've picked up....
Tomtom One speaker not loud enough and battery poor (2 hrs)
Navman F20 better battery and speaker ..?

Can I buy both models for UK and just flick in a new mem card if
we ever go to Europe......? The UK only models are cheaper which would
be fine for now - I am prepared to take a hit on paying extra if we go
to Europe -

Any idea on reliability and customer support both models? Is one company more 'money-making' than the other for after sales?

Can I program in where I've just parked my car on both models and
get it to trace me back to car later - I often can't find where I parked
my car (combination of idiot/daydreamer/over 50)

I like plugging stuff into my PC so are both equally as good for downloading maps/speed cameras etc.

Will it ever be possible to connect up a gadget that will detect
mobile speed guns to either model ? if so which one most likely
to be best ....

Whats this about Navman only providing s/w and cable in mid January?

Here's a strange one - I was in Halfords last week and the
Tomtom rep. was there pushing their product. Slick guy!
Whats your postcode he said to me - BS20 8JF says I,
-look says he you live in Nore Road, Portishead - No I dont says I, I live in Homestead which is off Down road and there is no access from whre you just said - Oh says he, maybe the maps need updating -I've been living there for 20 years says I. Maybe I'll try Navman F20 says I - dont bother says he, its the same map provider.... hmmmm - what do u guys think - is that true ?
I do alot of running about and would not have been that impressed if I couldnt find my road as per this example ! -
Over to you Tomotom One of F20.....
thanks in anticipation,
newbie Don

My wife has the F20, & I've got TT navigator. TT1 is similar, but I can't give a 100% comparison, but here's a few pointers

Tomtom One speaker not loud enough and battery poor (2 hrs)
Navman F20 better battery and speaker ..?

F20 speaker isn't that good either, just strong enough to hear over road noise.

The F20 you can buy memory cards with maps preloaded. With TT1 I think you can download the maps from TT & transfer them using TT home, but may need to buy an extra memory card to store them on.

Can I program in where I've just parked my car on both models and
get it to trace me back to car later - I often can't find where I parked
my car (combination of idiot/daydreamer/over 50)

I don't think you can on either of them, you can only store a point on a road, a carpark won't be a reconised point.

I like plugging stuff into my PC so are both equally as good for downloading maps/speed cameras etc.

TT has more functions for downloading stuff, F20 software looks very basic. You won't be able to add custom voices for speed zoned warnings.

Will it ever be possible to connect up a gadget that will detect
mobile speed guns to either model ? if so which one most likely
to be best ....

No

They keep putting the release date back. Don't forget to budget for the extra cost of this. It should be included with TT1.

Yes it's true, they both use teleatlas maps.

Again my TT experiance is navigator only, please correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

You can add maps for Europe/ USA etc at an extra cost, if you are considering Europe for later this year I would get the additional maps as part of the purchase price, it will work out considerably cheaper.

They are both into "money making" and to be honest the customer support isn't that good, you can phone them up but it is often quicker to get an answer on this forum to be honest.

Not too sure about the Navman unit, but you can do this with the TomTom in a number of ways:
You can store your cars position as a POI and then select navigate to it or
select Navigate to GPS position - either way will perform the same function.

You can do considerably more with the TomTom device in terms of customisation.

If you load up the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database and configure it you will get prior notification of mobile camera entrapment locations (as well as fixed camera locations), not quite the same as a detection system, but to be honest the detection systems will only alert you to the presence of a speed camera once they are "illuminated" the database will warn you in advance of known locations irrespective of being manned or not. If you're considering europe maps, as Mike says you're better off buying them upfront as part of the system. www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk are doing the TT GO 510 with western europe maps for £210, well worth considering at this price, only £10 more than the cheapest TT1 Europe.

:D

Mike and Rodder - thanks VERY much for your time and info - much appreciate it. Rod, I've had a look at TT510 but price over my budget, especially apres Christmas, even tho it's got the maps. (My brother in law might share those costs if he goes to Europe and I loan him the unit) - so I'm gonna go for a TT One with its flexible PC features, as Mike says, - and I'm very happy with that for now - thanks guys for helping me decide.

brill forum, I'll be back...

Safe travel to you all for 2007
Don
