TomTom Navigator 5 on Mio 269

Finally it looks like this is posible.

A number of different message boards and individuals have been trying to nail down how to get TTN5 running on a Mio., and finally they have managed it. All credit for the process and discoveries below go to others spread across the web, so thanks to their work and persistance.

I have done the install myself and can confirm that it works superbly. The screen updates in particular are more fluid compared to the slightly jerky screen updates on MioMap.

Obviously you have to have unlocked your mio to get access to the base OS.

The key to getting TTN5 to function is principally related to the existance of a .dll file called Gx.dll within the the windows directory. Remove this ( I actually just copied this to the hard drive , just in case).

Soft reset the machine and then install TTN from your cd via activesync or from an SD card. Some people have reported problems running the install programme, but you can manually run the cab files on the device with sucess.One exception is that some have also reported problems where the main programme cab did not build the \progams\navigator subdirectory and files correctly. I just copied the contents of this directory on my Ipaq install to the SD card and transfered it to the Mio.

Importantly you need to have the voices stored under the \tomtom\tomtom directory. Also you can copy your country map to the Hard drive or it will function directly from the SD card for Mio 268 owners.

After the usual set up, ensure the the GPS receiver is getting it's data feed from the comm2 port - and thats it.

Once turned on the screen orientates itself correctly and you can use it as if it were running on an ipaq. Sound is strong and some of the Hard bottons seem to function logically - sound mute and 'back' and itinery screen.

Perhaps I was just lucky but it started correctly, selected my country map and off it went . It quickly picked up 7 satellites and started to function. I have yet to get it out on the road to see if the screen refreshes are better when travelling at speed but otherwise all seems successful, a quick stroll around the house on to the road confoirmed that it was really sensitive.

Finally I put a shortcut on the desktop so that now I can choose MioMap or TomTom depending on my preference. Having succesfully got the POI and speed camera databases working using POIedit and POI observer with MioMap I will try out the TomTom ov2 speed camera database at some point over the next week or so.

One final point - I have tested MioMap to see if it functioned correctly without the removed .dll file and it all seems okay. I cannot confirm if other software is affected yet - perhaps someone else may have tested.

gx.dll is the GAPI (Gaming API) function library that allows direct access to the screen buffer. By removing this DLL you force applications into GDI mode. This will result in somewhat slower drawing performance, but it should be ok for Navigation purposes.

Most probably the gx.dll on the Mio was non-standard, and TomTom fell over when it tried to use it.

What I might try then is to use .dll the file from the ipaq - this might just function. I dont't know enough about programming to understand if this might have been customised to ensure compatability with the orientation of the screen, but will load it tonight and see if it spoils the party. If anything the screen refreshes appear much smoother with TTN than MioMap but will need to do some driving around to see what the performance is like.

Thanks for explaining what the .dll does... I feel some more research coming on!

Hi i am going to try this on my Mio 268, can you tell me if i will need to format my SD card befor i start, i am having problem getting activsync working so will try doing the install directly to the DS card.
