voice warnings for POIs on Navigator 5

Help! I am relatively new to all this, but managed to download speed camera warnings, and all the bells work magnificently. But I would prefer the voices, and downloaded them. I can hear them on my PDA (Ipaq 1940) but they don't work in action, and I still hear the bells - I put the voice warnings in the same folder (Gt Britain Map). Do I have to disable the bells? Will the voices then work?

Hi JoyP, and welcome on board.

The bells etc. are contained in a file called data.chk. This will be found in My Device\Program Files\Navigator. This is the file you need to replace.

Which voices did you download?

You need to know which version of TTN you have, so that you have load the right file. Each Version has a different File. Sad

When you know the Version you can goto http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-poi-alerts.php and halfway down the page there are the Version Downloads.

Then rename your original data.chk to data.chk.old, copy the new file to the same location and rename that to data.chk. You will need to be able to see the File Extensions to do this. If you can't see them, in File Explorer go to Folder Options > View, and UNTICK 'Hide Extensions for known file types'.

Finally go into Manage POI and in Warn When Near, set up the warnings as you want them. Note that the sound labels will still be Bell etc. but the sound will be different. You will have to test each one to get the correct warning.

when I go to "data" in Navigator, and tap on it, I get a window saying "data.chk there is no application associated with "data". run the application first." I can't do that and open "data". Also I can't find "folder options". I have managed to put the voices on the storage card, in a folder called "voices", and in that folder there are files called DATA04 and DATA05. The file in Navigator is just called "data." Can I rename that?

It all seems very complicated. Should I delete all the voices I have already downloaded? Or can I copy them to a relevant folder, which I would have thought was "Great Britain Map" where the other POI warnings are. But I already did that....

To remind you, I have an Ipaq 1940 and TT Navigator 5. I am usually good at this sort of thing, and am feeling very frustrated!

Sorry.
I haddn't noticed that the Caps lock was down, and at my typing speed, it would have been a long task to re-type it.

Interesting though, that capital letters are seen as shouting ... I shall remeber that.

what to do is, connect your PDA to your computer. Then go into 'Navigator' and rename data.chk file to data.chk.old. This will mean you have your old warnings to hand should anything go wrong (all you would need to do is remove the .old from the name to revert to your original warning sounds).

Then, tap on the bottom right of your tomtom program (whilst it is running). This should show you which version you are running (either 5.0, 5.1 or 5.2). Download the corresponding data.chk from:

(make sure you get the right version because they will not work on each other)

Put the new file you downloaded into your navigator folder and rename it data.chk

You should now have voice warnings when you manage your POI's in tomtom (although the headings will be the same, the warnings should be different)

The warning voices contained in the data.chk file are located in the programs / navigator folder as per Old boys post above, what you need to do is re-name the existing data.chk file to old_data.chk (for example), then cut and paste the new file into the same folder, the PDA cannot run this file as it is only data used by TomTom. Once you have the file in the correct place do a SOFT reset then fire up TomTom and configure the warnings. At least re-naming the file allows you to revert back to the original settings at some future point if you wish to. One final tip before you mess around with settings and files like this make sure you have a working back-up of the device in a working configuration, just in case it all goes wrong, You can also change the text accompanying the warnings using POIExtend, but lets go slowly to start with - Mike

I was well on the way, had found the data.chk folder, but now suddenly when I go to TomTom (whether connected or not to the computer) it fails to start. So I now can't do anything!

I don't want to give up, but sometimes wish I hadn't started this! I tried a soft reset, that made no difference - I just get the message that TomTom failed to start.

What now?

Try deleting the new data.chk file in programs/ navigator folder, then re-name the old_data.chk (or what ever you called it) back to data.chk, soft reset and try running up TomTom again, if this works then you probably had the wrong data.chk file downloaded, check te version of TomTom you are using and make sure you have the correct file for that version and type of software - Mike

I still can't do it - mainly because, I think, I can't find out which version of Navigator I have - as you have to tap on the icon while it is running, but now it won't start!

I think I may have to uninstall the whole program, and start again. Can I do that? And how? Have I corrupted the storage card by messing about with the Data files? I feel utterly useless, and usually I am quite computer literate.

Hello again. I contacted TomTom's support, and they came back to me very quickly, I must say, telling me to download the latest update to Navigator 5.1. I have done this, and now my TomTom works again. So I will try to download he voices again, and will keep you posted!

Joy, Check the version yu have loaded, it should be TTN5,21 if its a recent Download from TT, I only mention this as you quote 5,1 make sure you get the correct data.chk this file resides in programs / Navigator not the SD card. Also when changing files NEVER delete the old ones just rename them so you can revert back if required, finally get a backup utility and backup the PDA so you can allways return to a working state easily - Mike

Well, I tried. I got my update (2.21) and downloaded the right voice files, renamed the data file, put the new one in (I now have both in the "Navigator" folder). I did a soft reset - and TomTom failed to start! So I re-downloaded the update - the new files still seem to be in the folder, but I can't find the voices. When I test the warnings all I get is the old bells, etc.

I thought that the warning voices are a good idea, but my system doesn't seem to like them! Any ideas?

OK you need to check exactly which version of TomTom you are running and the map details, which are avail from the preferences / show version and make double sure you have the correct file for your application - re-loading the TomTom will have reset the data.chk file (and the associated warnings) with the original file and audio, so you are back to a setup as per factory default - Mike
