MapSource and Map Updates

Can anyone give some advice/info regarding maps.

I travelled from hartlepool to hull and the A1M - A1 - M62 interchange is new and not reflected on my Nuvi 310 or Mapsource. I've updated my Mapsource to the latest software verion, now this may be a silly question but when I update it, is this just a sofware update or an actual map update.

If its not a map update, how do I update the map of the UK on my 310?
