With bad luck like yours the premiums would soon be more than the cost of a new Sat Nav!!

Ouch. I seem to remember picking up a leaflet on SatNav insurance in Halfords but can't comment further as I decided not to take out a policy, |

Gary,
sorry to hear of all your losses.
Out of intrest just how did you lose them as if left unattended and on display or visable mount without the gps on display would probably invalidate any policy. If its not there then they can't steal it.
Your car pollicy may actually include your gps might be worth a check. |

Having insurance is not going to stop it getting nicked. As stevei says, probably the best advice we could give you is DON'T LEAVE IT IN THE VEHICLE. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Um, THE most stolen device, these days, from cars. If you were leaving it in the car - WHY?
If you weren't, were is it getting nicked from? (ie home insurance should cover stuff stolen from your home, and perhaps whilst you're out and about). |

Thanks for the kind words... I have just stumbled on a site called LINK REMOVED BY ADMIN ,seems a resonable way forward especially with the visual reminder they promised me. |

A sticker is something that I and many other have thought of .
The problem though with this is thieves know peolpe will stick them on as a deterrent and then carry on as before.
If you Google "Sat Nav insurance" there several choices .

See the thing is, once could be accepted - just an oversight, in a hurry. Twice is just careless. Three times and what were you thinking?
Why on earth wouldn't you take it with you after the first time?
The press and media haven't been shy in pointing out that sat navs are the most nicked things from cars. Now I can understand the people who've never had anything nicked, nor feel that they are likely to - perhaps due to where they park.
However, the realisation after having ONE nicked should have been a wake up call.

I think you're making a mistake. Same with the enquiry for insurance (doesn't your car insurance cover it?) - it's a false economy - once you start claiming, the premiums will make you cry.
Prevention is better than cure. Buy and display some sticker or notice, and you're actually drawing attention to your car, and that you have a sat nav. Now the ne'er-do-wells may actually believe you've removed it, but it may have been enough to highlight your car in a group of others, and they may think where there's smoke...
If you really want to stop this happening to you - or stop it having any teeth - remove your sat nav (and the mount, and any leads from being visible), and make sure that you aren't leaving a mark behind on the windscreen by wiping it afterwards. They can't nick what isn't there.
Sure - you may still get the odd speculative smash - but there's nothing you can do about that, really. Some kind of sticker or notice will only serve to draw attention, and plant the seed that you have mobile gadgets that are worth nicking - so don't leave any evidence that you have. |

Your all right, i think what seems good about this company is the speedy replacement for work purposes, insurance covers it alright but leaves you lost without a SatNav, the logo's arrived today and are subtle and let's hope effective, i always take my satnav with me now...rest assured. |

Then I'm puzzled - if you always take it with you, now - why do you need specialist insurance, and why do you need stickers for your car, advertising to would-be thieves that you own a sat nav, and this may be that one, absent-minded - or perhaps beligerent - moment when you leave it in the glovebox, under a front seat, or in the boot?
Take it with you, don't bother with the stickers, and if you're STILL convinced you need specialist insurance, then by all means - waste your money. Just don't advertise to prospective thieves that you use sat nav. |

Ok, hopefully that will save you a smashed window and a lot of grief. A lot of people recomend that you take the mount off the windscreen too but that isn't always going to be practical if you are in and out of the vehicle all day.
The other alternative to look at is a Smartphone with TomTom on it. That way you only have a mobile phone holder which isn't going to look as attractive as a sat nav mount to the thief.
Good luck, and to the forum by the way. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I dunno - I think it's 50/50 it would either deter or entice somebody to chance something worth nicking. Surely it's more likely to simply draw attention, than pass a car by and look at another.
I don't honestly think they spend a lot of time, agonising whether to smash and grab, I think they just look for obvious tells, or signs of promise, then go for it.

Well if it's the i3 we're talking about (dunno about the other Garmin models), IME it's as easy to take the whole thing out of the car (ie mount AND i3) as it is to detach the i3 from the mount.
Give the windscreen a bit of wipe where it's been, and generally keep the windows clean enough so that a clean patch doesn't look suspect, and jobs a good 'un.

Personally, I think if car crime is something of an issue to you, then you're best not leaving anything of value in, and no visible clues that you tend to use anything of value. |
