I've just entered the world of in-car GPS by purchasing a Tom Tom One v2 (UK regional).
When I bought it, the guy in the shop said that I would be entitled to free map upgrades "for life". I was just wondering if this is true and if it is, how exactly it works.
The 'Home' software states that you can download updates "for maps that you own". Fair enough, but how does it know that I own the UK map for example? Should I be using the product key on the credit card type thing I got in the box??
I'm just curious because I've already noticed one major road and a few roundabouts that my map is unaware of! However, 'Home' says that there are no updates.
I believe the mapping in my unit is TeleAtlas - any idea how often this is updated?
Any pointers / explanations welcome.

I'm afraid you have been totally misled. Software updates are usually free, map updates never are.
I would go back to the shop and give the guy a piece of your mind!

Again... updates of software, not maps.
Keep the product key card safe, you don't need it unless the TomTom asks for it, possibly after a software update, or if you copy your map to another memory card.

Welcome to the wonderful world of satnav! Maps are always out of date, somewhere.

About once a year. An update is overdue for owners of previous versions, but if you have just bought yours, any differences may be slight.
One thing people often do is post on the forums when a new map comes out, to ask those who have bought it if an area of special interest to them has been improved. |

i have just bought what must be the latest map.. one houseing estate (ex council) which was demolished at least six years or more ago is still on it.. and the marina where i keep my boat which has been there for five years isnt on it..
the maps are simply out of date by several years in many instances.. in truth i dont see this ever changing.. the logistics involved are just to massive to keep them really up to date..
i was amazing at the detail that is on the maps thow.. every bridleway thats been in existance for at least 100 years is on em.. he he

I have used TT navigator for a few years and now the TT One regional to get to mobile phone base stations. Many of these are on hill tops. You would actually be suprised how many forestry tracks, bridelways and other farm type tracks are on the teleatlas maps, there are loads!!

To which the obvious answer is "We know! TomTom keeps trying to get us to drive up them :x " |

i just did a 2700 mile camping trip around most of scotland and the western isles.. we sought out the backroads and "Off-roads" deliberately.. we used a big normal map and "ozzy" as we call the tomtom..
ozzy had the lot.. if a track existed ozzy had it.. we even used him to see how far the track went..
i forgive him for not knowing the difference tween a forestry track and a motorway.. but when u actually want to go down a forestry track or know how far it goes.. ozzy is the business.. he he he
