|
|
Hi there.
My RBT is arriving Tueseday so forgive me if I'm still missing something.
I want the RBT to log every car movement and I want it done all the time. So what I was thinking of is taking the battery out, connecting power supply and have it power-supplied only when the car runs.
Is there any drawback when using it this way? Is it somehing I could try to do (can handle electronics - a bit), or is it a job for a pro? |

I wouldn't recommend it, why not just use the supplied cigarette lighter cable and connect that to a cigarette lighter socket hard wired into the vehicle? You must not remove the cigarette lighter plug as this has the voltage reduction circuit to drop from 12v to the required 5v.
Don't forget the RBT-3000 has a limit on the amount of data it can log before it either stops loggging or wipes and restarts from the beginning (user configurable).
If you wire it in this way and leave the hardware switch at ON it will power ON or OFF with the ignition if the supply is ignition controlled. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi!
I don't like the cables flying around in the car for something that is always in use. I would ocasionaly read the memory to PocketPC, or take the RBT unit to the PC. How does it store the log? If it looses the power supply (and say there is no battery) will it forget all the data?
What's wrong with unit being powered on everytime I turn on the car? |

Why would there be more cables if you used the supplied power lead over a hard wired solution that involved opening the unit and dispensing with the battery?
If the battery in the Royaltek dies, the memory will empty, the log is stored in volatile memory within the unit itself.
There is nothing wrong with having it power on every time the car is started, that is what I reccomended! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi!
I don't quiet understand.
If i leave the battery inside, and wire it the way you reccomend (hardwired to 5V, switch in "on" positoin) - if I turn the car off and take the key out I'll break the power supply, but what makes the device shutdown? It appears to me it will in this case drain the battery out and loose the data eventually (if I don't use car for 10 hours). It isn't good for battery life either. Or am I missing something? Is it somehow smart-controlled?

No you're quite right and I was confusing this with my TomTom BT GPS which when connected via it's cradle to a 12v source will power on/off with the ignition.
As you say, if wired to power and the power is switched off the Royaltek would continue to run on battery until it discharged or power was re-applied.
My apologies for the confusion here _________________ Darren Griffin |
