Hi there, spent a couple of nights searching and reading this forum for answers but i'm at a loss as to what to do now. Here goes...

Tomtom is 2 years old so thought I'd update with new maps and maybe add speed cameras too.
Connected unit to laptop via usb and it loaded Home onto my laptop.
I registered an email, username etc
Tried to go into the update device option but says I must connect tomtom (tomtom is connected however)
In my computer tomtom is recognised as a removable device, but with no files in it. (should be uk maps on sd card)
Switched tomtom off and disconnected from usb
Switched tomtom on normally but now get image showing sd card being taken out device and big red cross through it.
Tried reset button on bottom of unit following tomtom website instructions but no change.
Now when connecting tom tom to laptop via usb just get image of tom tom on screen with usb cable attached.
I dont get as far as the connect to computer question but my device is still recognised in my computer.
I need to try and fix this for monday morning for a trip down south!

Please help!

Gill

Just connecting TomTom doesn't do anything - you then have to switch TomTom on. At that stage you should see a dialogue box asking if you want to connect tomTom to the computer. You may then be asked to allow download of another piece of software to enable connection to be made. Accept this

Hi, have you tried a 30 second re-set? Press re-set button in, and hold it in for 30 seconds, also, have you got a Windows Explorer backup, not a TomTom backup?

Not sure what u mean by windows explorer backup but if you mean did i back up the sd card to the computer first then NO unfortunately Sad
The tomtom now does not work so i assume i have wiped the maps and other details of it.

I think this may be where your problem lays at the moment.

Not using Safely Remove Hardware can cause corruption of the SD Card.

If you have an Explorer Backup you should be able to restore from that.

Look at Number 1 here, Windows explorer backup, If you didn't make one, then you haven't got one.

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=50045

Do you have a card reader? are you saying, you can't see anything on your SD card if you connect the TomTom to the Computer/card reader?

Afraid it is not something you find, it's something you make.

TomTom strongly suggest you make a backup before you do anything with your unit (it's usually on the first page of the manual). THEY made the "Home" utility to do it.
However, the Home utility is pretty useless. Early versions made incomplete backups, the new version only lets you make ONE backup and cannot find backups made with older versions.

Therefore, the advice from this site and many others is that you should make complete backups using Windows Explorer. It is #1 on the list of TomTom FAQs

All this is academic if you haven't made one...

It looks like you have corrupted the card by not using the "safely remove hardware" function in Windows.

The only way we can rescue anything is if you can still get the PC to recognise the Go's SD card as a new drive (which you say you can) and if you can get the PC can read ANY contents of the card (which you say you can't). Try that again (IGNORE HOME, if it starts up, shut it down again). You could also try a card reader.
If still no joy, you can download the operating software for free (NOT a straightforward process, I'm afraid), but you will have to buy a new map.

EDIT: Sorry Tanda, you beat me to it...

Ok , just had my friend bring round his tomtom and I put his sd card into my tomtom and connected it to laptop. I still do not get tomtom home to recognise the device nor do I get the connect to computer yes or no question. I was very careful about disconnecting properly and when we turned the unit on as normal it worked perfectly.
Is there any difference between the tomtom usb cable and any other mini usb cable as the only thing I can think of now is that i'm not using the original tomtom usb cable as I couldn't find it. But doesnt explain why it's showing up in "my computer" but not in tomtom home.

No there's no difference, it's a standard USB cable.

I'm not sure which you mean when you say "when we turned the unit on as normal it worked perfectly"

Please leave "Home" out of the equation for a moment...

Are you saying YOUR machine worked perfectly with HIS SD card?
and are you saying that with HIS card in YOUR machine, the PC could read it? (i.e. show the card's contents in Explorer).

If so, that is entirely what we would expect if your card is corrupted.

yes that's whats happened. But just to put a twist on things, a minute ago i just connected my tomtom via usb and guess what.... i got the connect to computer screen! Hit ok and now it seems to be installing a new (i think) version of Home. Can i somehow copy my pals sd card onto my computer and transfer it onto my previously corrupted sd card... or a new sd card if needs to be?

Good, we're winning (a bit).

You can't copy his card because his maps are locked to his card. If you take control of them he loses it.

The whole exercise depends on you getting to see the contents of YOUR card via Explorer in order to get YOUR maps back.
You can copy all the rest of the system files from his card if you like (but as I said, you can download those anyway.

I have a similar problem with my rider2.
It connects to tt home ok and all features appear to work except 'operate my device'
All I seem to get is a note to say connected to headphones and then No Maps Found
Other than that everything else works as it should
You mention downloading system files, can you let me know where to find them
Thanks
