Hi folks, a newbie here.

I've got between £100 - £130 to spend on a GPS unit. I've seen the Garmin i3 and the Navman iCN 320, both priced at £99.

But I've read some reviews where people have said they frequently lose the GPS signal in built-up areas and tree-lined roads. Living in the West Country, I can imagine I'd have similar problems.

Can anyone recommend a good unit that doesn't cost the earth?

Welcome to the forums.

I've never lost the signal with the i3. Best £100 ever spent!

Thanks for the welcome!

How does it cope with built-up areas and tree-lined roads? That's my only quibble with it.

You won't be able to put cameras or other custom POIs on the Navman

I live in a rural area, and haven't used the i3 in a city, but I've had no problems in towns with fairly narrow roads and houses of 3 stories or more on either side, or with tree-lined roads. I bought an external aerial from Maplin, which should help in such conditions, but haven't needed to use it.

I got the i3 today and have just been out for a test drive. What a great unit! It didn't lose its signal once and I deliberately took it down country lanes which I knew were overcast with trees. The machine took it all in its stride. I desperately tried to confuse it by taking wrong turns etc. "Recalculating" said the i3, and in a few minutes I was back on the correct route without having to pull a u-turn.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I hope you're as happy with your i3 as I am with mine. :D

And if you do have any problems you'll get loads of help from these forums.

I'm interested in how to load the POI speed camera database onto it. I've installed the drivers for the i3 on my PC, but how do I get the camera database onto the unit?

You will need to download POILoader from the Garmin website, in order to install the cameras and, if you want, additional POIs from MaFt's website. Follow the second post here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=28985&start=75

However, some users with the newer i3s have found they get a message saying there isn't room for all the POIs, in which case see this post: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=245440#245440
