Does anyone know how the Garmin i3 calculates the shortest and fastest routes? On the "fastest" setting, does the Garmin prefer to direct you down A roads instead of residental areas due to the speed limit differences, even though the residental area route may be shorter?

Welcome

Yes, you are correct - that's pretty much how it works. Sat nav systems have a rough idea of the speeds you can do on a particular road type and it calculates the Fastest route based on the road type. Alternatively you can take the shortest route based solely on the distance.

The reality is slightly more complicated than that and you sometimes get odd routes (roads classified wrongly or other map errors), but mostly it works quite well.

No, my hat keeps me dry. It's just the pigeons which are a problem. Wink
