I've been away from this forum for a while since I got rid of my Mio 201 with Mio Map. I now see there is a raft of new Mio products for sale.My choice is between the P350 with TomTom Nav 5 and C510E .The C510E looks better value as it is slightly cheaper and has bluetooth .The P350 however ,looks more like a convetional PDA with better buttons and can use other navigation software.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use other navigation software (for instance I would like to use the OS map software for hiking) with the C510E ither by using the MMC card or reprogramming the flash ROM?
Can the C510E also re-orient the screen for picture mode for normal PDA use?
How does the new Mio MAp software compare with the TomTom? The main reason I wanted to try the TomTom was for the full Postcode search and the fact that the screen icon buttons were big enough to be pushed with the finger.Both these advantages seem to be included in the new Mio Map. |

P350 = Pocket PC
C510E = Windows CE device
That's the only real difference. Not all programs that run on a Pocket PC will run on a Windows CE device (the other way round it's always working)
TomTom will run on the C510E, and you will be able to rotate the screen, but it is not as seemless as on a Pocket PC. _________________ Lutz

Thanks for your reply Lutz
I didn't twig that they used two different operating systems.If I get the P510E I will check if it will run the hiking software I want. Could you also tell me how the Tom Tom S/W will run .I assume from an MMC card plugged in the MMC slot but I think there is a setting up proceedure . |

Yes, of course this involved the deshelling of the device (to gain access to the Windows CE core) and a number of other tricks to get TomTom (or your topo program) to run.
If the C510 doesn't have a flash drive (unlike the 710) then yes, you'd need to run it from SD or MMC card. _________________ Lutz

I asked the company Handtec who are selling the C510E and they say it can't be reprogrammed for different nav. software.Maybe they just don't know how.Could you point me to a link that explains in detail how to do this ,otherwise I think I had better play safe and get the P350.I am not a programing expert. The C510E does have a flash ROM but from what I know about BIOS on flash ROM on PC computers reprograming them is a bit dicey. |
