Hi,
I would like to start using GPS with my HP Jornada 548 (Pocket PC). Could anyone recomend a compatable GPS receiver for the Jornada, as i've been unable to locate one that is compatable so far??

Thanks in advance,

Stu

There are hundreds of GPS that are compatible with 548.

You can use one of the CF GPS, but you will not have any place to put your maps.

I suggest you get one of the Garmin/Magellan handhelds (plenty of reviews on this site) then get a connecting cable from us (for around $2x) and you are off.

What would the gain be from using a handheld rather than a compact flash slot GPS? Sorry, i'm fairly inexperienced with this subject Embarassed

I'd like to be able to take lat/long co-ords and put them straight into memory and then transfer to Excel....would a handheld GPS with connecting cable allow me to do this?

TIA

Stu

The problem with most handhelds is they're not kitted out for Street Routing (if that's what you're looking for). They're okay if you want to create waypoints and walk around a park or forest, you can even load Garmin MapSource maps to Garmin's and Magellan MapSend maps to Magellan's, but in most cases the handheld (recreational) GPS Receivers although they will give map support they won't give extra features like auto-re-routing, voice navigation etc.

If you're mainly looking for topographical maps, like Ordnance Survey Land Ranger, then recreational handheld GPS Receivers are better suited for this kind of journey.

Leadtek 9531/9532, Holux GM-210 and RoyalTek Sapphire all work with the Jornada 54x series, but these are cabled solutions. Using a CF GPS card won't work with the 548 as you need a storage card for maps.

Cheers for the info Dave.
The main use of the GPS would be for close location reference for my Paleontology field work, ie, the exact location of finds etc, (ok, GPS is good to around 10m, but thats close enough for me). Therefore maps wouldn't be completely necessary. I'm looking at the etrex as a quick solution, as long as it is able to download lat/long references for compilation.
