ive found an interesting little program which allows you to see how many ma are being used by different applications, bluetooth and wifi etc.
you can read and download from here

www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=706&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1ad

i can therefore calculate that an active bluetooth connection to a gps will consume a mere 20ma. to those who use their PDA gpps outdoors will know that battery life is everything. Therefore i am no longer considering purchasing a new globalsat SDIO gps receiver which consumes 90ma.

it appears at present that bluetooth is still the best.

ive also looked into underclocking the pda, in attempt to conserve energy. results so far have been very dissapointing, infact energy consumption seems to increase... not sure why or how accurate the results are.

WIFI as a matter of interest uses huge amount of power ie 250ma.

ive just tested the extended battery for ipaq 4150. 1800mah.. running bluetooth connection tho gps receiver, back light on for 10s periods intermitantly otherwise off. Great results battery was still 30% after 14hrs.

im about to test a mobile battery pack (3600mah) for recharging the ipaq and rikaline gps reciver whilst in the wilds. im hoping to get to 36hrs continous use or a 3 day trek. i will post results as i get them.
