I note that Garmin now offer UK Topographical Maps for use in the Quest (and other Garmin products). Has anyone any experience of using this? As the maps are presumably more detailed is the screen refresh rate slow? Is the detail level compatible with Ordnance survey maps? - the Garmin blurb suggests they are but is this the case? Are there any significant positives and negatives for the walker/cyclist?

The short answer is NO the maps are not as detailed as the OS 1:50000 raster maps used by Memory-Map.

I have just tried to set up a walk route using the Garmin Topo 2 maps in MapSource on my PC and a lot of the paths shown by Memory-Map are not on the Garmin vector maps. Before buying the Topo 2 DVD for Great Britain I had thought that I would be able to retire my Memory-Map software but I now know that I will not be able to do so Sad

I have not noticed any slowness in the screen refresh rate on my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx when running the Topo maps. Previously I used a Garmin eTrex Legend with map data from European MetroGuide v4 and of course whilst walking there was very little detail on the screen other than the route that I wanted to follow. With the Topo map data on the 60CSx there is something to see on the screen and although the contour detail is very good I would not want to rely on the topo data without a route defined.

I bought the 60CSx for the more sensitive GPS and electronic compass. Both of these features are proving their worth. However, I still prefer the eTrex joystick to the multiple buttons on the GPSmap 60, but that is just my preference.
