Driving on the M40, as I do often, there seem to be a large number of bridges marked as speed camera locations in the PWGPS database. however, AFAICS many/most of these arent speed cameras, they are the Trafficmaster infra red traffic jam sensors.

Has anyone else noticed this? I am using a oldish version, dec or jan, but there are far too many for it to be a one-off bit of bad data.

Are there a lot of muppets who drive around, note these as speed cameras, and so multiple muppet contributions mean they get taken at face value ?

I am willing to admit I could be the muppet here but I'm pretty sure I am correct, next time I will note one with exact location and post here to see if anyone else can verify.

Are you using the single file version of the cameras? If so, you won't know whether you as being warned of gatsos or mobile sites.

I am but they arent either of those, and the locations coincide exactly with the trafficmaster sensors, probably in 5 or 6 locations at least. This is on the stretch of the M40 from J4 up to the M42 junction. I've never seen a mobile camera on those bridges. I suppose it could be there were some there at one point, in which case they must have accumulated over the years and never been removed, so eventually each bridge is marked as a mobile camera location.

Would be interesting to hear from anyone that uses that section of road if thats the case, that they are marked as mobiles on the bridge. In which case, *none* of them were there last week :-)

I agree there does seem to be a lot......... and I'm sure that at least some of them are Traffic Master cameras getting reported by accident......

One point though - The police do park mobile camera vans on bridges (this is getting very popular)..... and these are moved around a lot to different bridges etc.

This would also account for the number of Mobile site alerts you get. One mobile Van could be responsible for a number of reported alerts at different locations.

sounds like it could be where the mobile vans sit on top of the bridges

Yes..... and unfortunately by their nature they are capable of creating more than one POI in the database.... and a mobile camera location is a camera location regardless of age as it can always be used again.

I've checked that stretch and they have been reported as Mobile Cameras so its unlikely that they mistook TrafficMaster's PRTM sensors.

Warwickshire's Camera partnership is very active on the M40 with regular haunts on overbridges in the Leamington Spa and Warwick areas.

Does that mean eventually every mway bridge will be marked as a mobile speed camera location? Seems a bit pointless? I suppose I could just switch those off separately? (to date I've only ever used the single camera file)

Only if every bridge is used. I don't see how else we can handle that!

Well, unless mobile cams are removed as quickly as they are added, then eventially every bridge *will* be marked as having a speed cam. Long before that point I think it will be easier just to look up as you approach a bridge, otherwise on some mways the alarm is going off every few minutes.
maybe switch it off on mways, back on on other roads. Bit ofa pain either way....

Perhaps this is a simplistic view...........

Surley the whole idea of the camera database is to report cameras........it follows on that mobile cameras fall into this category.......

Also mobile cameras can be in a number of different places, in this case motorway bridges, this does not make the report of a camera on that bridge any less valid no matter what the age of the report because that location can be used again - in fact it's probably more important as these are the ones that usually catch people out.

The police use this type of camera as a deterreant/cash machine for exactly that reason.

Whilst I accept and agree it's frustrating getting a "beep" on the sat nav and nothing is there I for one would prefer to be warned if a mobile camera could be on the bridge ahead and keep my licence in tact.

A few too many "beeps" in my opinion is a small price to pay for that....

On reflection I think you are correct, will download the multi-file version so I know its a mobile as a possibility, I think having the single file version made it more annoying than it need be.

I can confirm that there is a mobile unit at the high wcombe turn off(A404) and the turn off off for Milton/Thame (after stockenchurch but before thame services). But these are normally covered by traffic cars and not Safety camera partnerships.

Just to warn all there was a mobile camera over the bridge at the M6 jcn where it is crossed by the M56. Passed it tonight on way home and is was clocking the southbound drivers at 5.45pm

There are also 2 new cameras on the M6 both north and southbound. 1 is at Keele services southbound and is level with the petrol station. Saw it on the way down but could not get the position but it is not yet live.

There is another on the M6 north, 1mile before Keel services just after the bridge on the hill befotre the services, again no time to get co-ords but not yet live.

There are also specs in the roadworks on the M6 north and south a few junctions after Keel on the southbound side, North bound also but only managed to report the southbound earlier this week.

Hope this helps.
