Hello, all

I've been browsing this forum for a couple of weeks. I live in the US and it seems there are no decent StreetPilot forums based here (and I've been searching), so I'd like to ask some questions since everyone here is so knowledgable on the subject. I hope there are a some folks out there with US experience.

I now own a StreetPilot i3 and am very happy with it. Thanks to this forum, I learned how to change my splash screen - thanks!! I just purchased a friction mount for my dashboard and, while I understand what the "lock" lever does, what's the other lever for? It doesn't seem to do anything.

Also, I was browsing the Garmin site and noticed a download for a male and female British voice, with explicit download instructions about making sure one downloads these voices to the appropriate device - but then it doesn't tell you which devices are appropriate!

One of the examples is below:

Garmin: Voice, British English-Emily (TTS) Updates & Downloads
Voice, British English-Emily (TTS) Updates & Downloads
http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=1041 03/24/06, 17982 bytes

So I have no idea if I can add this to my i3. Anyone know?

Many thanks in advance for any help!
M. Smile

Hi, As far as I know by reading the posts on this forum, you can not change the voice on the i3, I am no expert, but I am sure someone who is will get back to you, Bert

Hi M

If you are referring to the lever on the bottom of the suction mount then according to the manual this is simply to pull against whilst opening the other lever proper if you ever need to detach the mount.

According to the Garmin website the voice download options do not function with the i3.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mickey - what's the friction mount like ?

Over here SatNavs are a big source of auto crime - cars are even being broken into where it is obvious that a suction mount has been used on the windscreen !

I quite like the look of the friction mount - does it stay on the dashboard well when cornering quickly ?

I've only used it twice, but so far I'm pleased with it. It's weighted as well as friction and, while I haven't taken any major corners quickly yet, I can't imagine it's going to go anywhere. The three arms are flexible to allow for different surfaces of the dashboard, so the entire unit goes into the glove compartment with no problem when I leave the car. I'd recommend it.

It didn't come with any type of manual (and, in retrospect, I guess there's really no need for one), which is why I had no idea what the other lever is for.

Too bad about the voices, tho... I want a British woman! Smile

I don't have the option to change to British, and believe me I've checked! My only option under "Language" is "Text Language". Perhaps the American model is different than yours?

Do you not have two options under "Language" - "Text Language" and "Voice Language"? Unless, as you suggest, the American model is different from the UK one, selecting "Voice Language" gives twelve options, the first two of which are "American English" and "British English".

TTS is text to speach - not a function the i3 has but the nuvi 350 does.

the voices are stored on the transflash card in the Folder Voice. In this folder there are 13 files(vpm),one for each language.

Have you been able to read your card and if so Do you have the same folder and if so have many language files are there?

If you only have one, then I will gladly Email you the English_British_.vpm. (1mb)It maybe that if you add another this will enable the menu to select a language

please pm if you want this

Good news... this discussion prompted me to download the full user's manual and saw that even the manual shows two options under the language setting: Text and Voice. So I wrote to Garmin tech support and asked why the manual showed the two options but my unit did not. They responded today telling me that the extra voices were on the installation DVD and I just had to install them manually (which is not stated anywhere in the manual!).

So I did and I now have a British woman (named Bettina) telling me where to go! Best of all, I didn't lose any of my favorites either.

Many thanks to all for the nudge in researching the problem. Hope you don't mind a Yank sticking around and learning from y'all (If it helps any, my boss - a wonderful woman - is British :D )

Really pleased you got it sorted, Mickey, but maybe you should see a therapist about your desire to be told what to do by British women! Wink Laughing
