Hello

I am off to Aus for 3 weeks, I am trying to find a way of using my Go 500 while over there. The TT SD card is now available but at £200 so that is an expensive option at £10 a day even if it does stop me rowing with my wife because she can't read a map!

I know the Oz maps are produced by a different supplier than ours in the UK.

I have been looking at SD cards for sale on ebay Australia. When I question sellors about the activation code they tell me that this system is not used in Oz and the cards are interchangable between TomToms.

Is that really true? Could I buy a 2nd hand original Oz SD card, use it and resell it again?

Otherwise I will buy a TomTom when I arrive (they are £150 more than UK prices because of the maps), keep the box, look after it well and sell it on Ebay at the end of the trip with a £30-£50 discount at the end of the trip. If anyone is interested in me bringing this back to the UK to sell let me know.

Tony

Also Australian maps require product/activation codes. The original SD's will be interchangeable between TomTom devices, same as original TomTom GO GB cards. But for a copy of the original SD card, or for map upgrades, you do need the activation code.

Yes, don't be tricked... You definitely need an Activation code for Oz maps.

I had a faulty unit and tried putting my old SD card into the new unit and it immediatly requested the authorisation code for the maps.

Nix (from Oz !!)

Is there any "legal" way to transfer maps between units. This post triggered the thought that there is a market for pre-owned maps. However, to remain "legal" you would have to be able to sell the map, and deactivate it from the original unit, then reactivate in the new one. I am sure that if Tom Tom charged a reasonable sum for this service, it would be taken up.

Alternatively, is there any entrepreneur in Australia who rents out Tom Tom satnavs, or who sells with an agreed buy back price.

Hello

I have been looking into the rental thing - the hire car company want aud 247 for rental for 2 weeks or about £103 in our money.

Buying a new unit on australian ebay www.ebay.com.au is around aud 700 and becuase they are so new over there second had units sell on ebay for about aud 600 - keep an eye on this for the finish price

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9710234364&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

unactivated maps go for £140 ish so easier to hire one with the car unless you plan to go back soon.

Going down the rental route, if this helps anybody who needs to hire a vehicle and perhaps one that has OEM satnav.
try needitnow.com
they are good for Oz and NZ. and both car rental and accom can come real cheap.
