What can the US spec unit do out of the box? I'm looking at buying one part way though my next trip, I know it comes with a 128mb SD card, does that have at least the US interstates on it?

I thought of buying the 520 (or Mio 269) to get the most immediate use out of the unit but the closed nature of those boxes (zero upgrade support from Mio) means I'd be happier in the long run with the PDA based 570..

Not sure if the US/Canada version is the same as the UK, but my PiN570 came complete with the software installed on the PiN and UK maps pre-loaded on an SD card provided by Navman.

So it did work out of the box pretty much- without installing the PC software, - infact it was the PC software that I found more flakey, but it does work once you know what to do.

So assuming it is sold as "with maps installed " I guess it will work for you without first connecting to the PC. There are some basic POI's included by Navman, but they don't seem to be pefectly accurate, and as you mention, if you want to add active and custom POI's (such as cameras etc) you'll then the PC- it's the only way to get them onto the unit.

Hope that this helps.
