I've just purchased TomTom 2 with the car kit, my car is a Peugeot 406, this has the cigarette lighter adjecnt to the gear lever in the centre console. As you can imagine the lead gets in the way.

I'm going to hard wire the power supply to a point behind he radio, this will give me a much neater set up. My question is this, when not using the car will I need to pull the plug on the car mount or can I leave the power on all the time? If it is not advisable to leave the power on all the time I might fit a switch.

You can leave it plugged in. I'm presuming you're talking about hard wiring it to the battery ? If so it just means that the receiver will always be powered, saving on the time for Time To First Fixes.

If you wire in the supply to an ignition fed supply, when you turn the ignition off this will cut the power supply.

My Peugeot 406 installation: http://pocketgpsworld.com/markincar.php.

I have no trouble with it left on permanently.

Just to add my experiences, I've hard-wired my Royaltek Sapphire GPS into my VW Passat. I'll eventially get around to posting some photos...

Basically I cut the wiring loom behind the 12V Cig lighter. Attached a cable block and wired in a slave lighter socket (in addition to the standard one). I was then able to plug the GPS into the slave power supply (behind the dash) and conceal the cables to the GPS mouse and to the PDA cradle.

Works a treat Mr. Green

It definitely helps fix times if the GPS is powered even if you are not using the PDA.

Make sure that the power supply is cut when you remove the ignition key though. The GPS uses around 200-300mA so it will drain the battery in a few days if you dont use the car.

All sorted, wired it into the radio supply, shuts down after 30 mins if the ignition is off and looks a whole lot neater.

Thanks to all for the advice.
