has anyone heard or seen any news about when navman are likely to distribute a driver update to resolve the comapability issues between 5550 & 3400?
it appears to suffer from similar problems the 5450 did before the update i.e. locking up whilst navigating

Ah, you've just triggered my memory. I don't think the 5550 and 5450 are the only iPAQ's experiencing this problem, in my testing I'm seeing this with the 2210 also. I haven't heard anymore about this, but I'll flag this in my questions to Navman. |

thanks dave, i contacted navman usa tech support as i'm sure the 5555 & 3420 will be suffering the same issues. they said navman are working on correcting the problem and an update will be available 'soon'. uk tech support were unaware the 5550 had been released!!! hmmmm
they said the problems are being caused by wm2003 which i guess is no surprise considering the problems with other apps. that used to run quite satisfactorily on top of ppc2002.
i guess they will get it resolved, but i'd appreciate it dave if you could speak with your contacts & see if they have an estimated delivery date.
thanks,
chrisw

i talked with tech support in new zealand this morning. they say they are very concerned with the current compatability issues with 5400 & 5500 series machines. it appears they are not sure if the problems with the 5500 series can be resolved at all as the majortiy of issues can be attributed to the os with little flexibility to instigate workarounds by navman. to make matters worse there are h/w compatability problems with the new ipaqs.
navman expect to release a service pack in 3 to 4 weeks, however it is very unlikely to address the major lockup issues as these are beyond the control of navman.
navman are a really helpful bunch of guys, but i feel like other 3rd party manufacturers they have been let down by hp and microsoft with these guys taking strategic decisions which makes older, but perfectly acceptable equipment useless with latest devices.
having talked to navman and with the bad experiences i have had during the last week or so with the 5550 i've decided to send the 5550 back and purchase a 3970.

The 2210's are also exhibiting this kind of lockup. Sometimes you can be running SmartST Pro for all of 5 minutes, and the whole PC freezes cold.
When it locks up on the 5550, is it just the application freezes, or the whole Pocket PC ? On the 2210 you can't even power it off at that stage, you have to soft reset to get it back to normal.
Yesterday in my testing of the 4400 I had 3 lockups in the space of 10 minutes. |

5 minutes!!! your doing pretty well, approximately 2 minutes was my limit.
the pocket pc freezes and requires a soft reset.
i'm now running with a 3970 and it's great, no lockups & sound is excellent. cannot really notice any appreciable difference in speed either.
in general everything seems more stable with ppc2002.

Well actually it was probably 2 mins, just took me 3 mins to recognise it had frozen because of all my other in-car voice navigation that was going off.
Tell me Chris, when your's did this, was it when you went round roundabouts ? Everytime I see the screen has hung, it's always on a roundabout! |

sorry for the delay getting back to you dave, been on away on business.
there didn't appear to be any pattern, it definately locked up a number of times before and after a roundabout, but it also locked many times when driving down a dual carriageway. as a designer of motion control equipment(robotics, not bowel control) i realise the importance of providing as much information to the development guys to assist in resolving the issues. but there just didn't seem to be any pattern, other than maybe time as it always locked 2-3 minutes after getting a 3d fix.
cheers
chrisw

I have a 4400 and h2100 pair which have the usual roundabout lockups and powering up problems. Navman Europe told me they will have an update in about two weeks' time and that's a couple of days back. I don't know this will address all main issues inflicting most newer iPAQs.
