I am new here, so I hope I have posted in the right place. Hi all.

I think I am going to buy Infomap Navigator 4.3 as I need something now, but the market has just taken off and we will see massive changes in the next 12 months.

The software appears to have everything I need, its not expensive, and I already have a laptop, but I saw somewhere that the satellite receiver they provide is not too good. I also see that the new tomtom one has some new receiving technique, which is apparently hugely better. (SiRF Star III ?)

a) Should I buy the Navigator software only and the receiver elsewhere?

b) Can I buy into this new receiving system?

All information VERY gratefully received.

Hi Lutz

Thanks for the reply - can I follow up with some more?

The satellite receiver looks exactly what I was asking about. My car is a BMW 5 series – (not the latest one but the one before that – 2002) - will I need this technology? Is it worth the extra £50 odd?

The software - why do you recommend iGuidance rather than Infomap? I have read your reviews (Deluo and iGuidance) and they seem more set up for the US market than Europe – although I can’t find the dates they were written and they may be out of date. No programmable POIs would seem to rule it out though. So why not Infomap?

The iGuidance web site also says
Quote:
"iGuidance works with any GPS receivers that are based on the NMEA protocol using RS232, USB, CF, or bluetooth interface. USB-based receivers must come with an USB-to-Serial bridge driver that is Microsoft certified in order to work with iGuidance on your laptop."

Since the receiver you suggest is a USB device, what does it mean for me?

Finally – where are you in Texas? Houston? We lived in Dallas for a time and loved Texas (we were made honorary Texans). We travelled an awful lot while we were there, but if I were to live in the ‘states west Texas is where I would go I think.

Thanks again for any help.

iGuidance is very easy to use, and it has the advantage that you can use it the same way on the PC and on the PDA. Maps are probably the same quality as the InfoMap ones.

The USB>serial converter is part of the driver that comes with the GPS receiver, so no worries here.

Are you referring to the Bluetooth capabilities of the BMW?

No, the possibility of the "metallic windscreen" problem to which a SirfStar III GPS Receiver seems to be the answer. Will I need one in a 5 series BMW?

Good - that's the simplest possible answer :D

I don't think the PDA route is one I am likely to follow - at my age the small screen can be a problem Sad

Thanks for all the help though - it is all very useful.

SiRF III receivers eat metallised windscreens for breakfast, and then ask for more ;-)

Hi Lutz

Ok - thats great - I will go for the newer receiver, but I will probably stay with my original choice of software. If it turns out I was wrong, I will certainly apologise most humbly.

Than you very much indeed for all your help.
