I have read a number of the threads on this web page to do with TomTom Navigator 2 and a number of them seem to deal with the slow performance of this software. I would like to buy TomTom Navigator 2 but I have a number of questions which I would like your help in answering.
1. I have a Jornada 540 PPC with 32MB RAM. Does anyone have a combination of this PPC and TTN2? If so what is the performance like?
2. How long does it take to plan the route “Great Yarmouth Borough Council to Tickhill Road DN10” detailed in another thread(http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/forum/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=62&TopicID=2755&PagePosition=4)?
3. With the above combination does the system re-calculate routes OK?
Unrelated to the above if you have the European map is it possible to create a single map file to cover the a route from say SE England to the South of France _________________ Thanks

Basil, I don't have the Jornada 540, but I do have an old Casio E125 running Windows CE 3. There was a noticable difference between a 64mb machine and a 32mb machine, also a difference between a 206mhz and what the casio was running (150Mhz). I tested this thoroughly under TomTom Navigator 1, but haven't tested TomTom Navigator 2. It was certainly useable and I did use it for several months on test, but the worst areas I found were trying to drag or zoom in/out on the map, and also calculating a route, this was where I saw the slowdowns. I wouldn't quite say it was half as slow as a Compaq iPAQ 3800 series, but it was quite slower.
European map wise, unfortunately no. The maps are still country based maps with country boundaries, so there is no way to navigate across these segments. You would have to plot a route between border crossings and save each point as a favourite so you could easily route between them. At each border crossing you would then have to change map and re-set your route again. |

Basil
I have a Jornada 545 with 16MB RAM. The programme is stored on internal RAM, the map on a 128MB CF card (I have the French map on a 256MB CF card). The GPS source is a Garmin GPS76.
I find the perormance totally acceptable. I previously had Navigator 1, and although Nav 2 is a bit slower, in real world situations it's fine. I ran the test route (normal calculation selected, road speeds at default, and I asked for the Quickest Route. I'm using the full Great Britain map, software version 2.24 and the time is from pressing OK to the Route Summary screen appearing). The time taken was 60 seconds.
The only time that the system can really slow down is: occasionally when it has just calculated a route and displayed the map it appears to freeze for about 10 seconds before the zoom controls work. I haven't found this to be more than a minor annoyance.
If it needs to recalculate the route when I'm out driving (if I take a different turn etc.), I have found the speed of recalculation to be well inside acceptable limits (usually 10 - 30 seconds or so, depending on the length of route).
I am very happy with the combination, and because this is the only use I have for a PPC (I am one of those wierd Apple Macintosh deviants), the only reason that I would contemplate changing the PPC is to get a brighter screen. The newer generations of PPCs are much better in the display department.
Having said that, I upgraded from Nav1 to Nav2 as soon as it was possible, and I never had any of the teething problems with Nav2 that many of the regulars here had....so sometimes it can pay to have steam driven kit!
I hope this information is of some help to you.
Tim
