Hi,

I'm looking to build into my car a GPS receiver with an external active antenna,

I'm looking to buy just the gps receiver module to mount on a prototype board,

I have found a few Receiver modules,

i.e. http://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/acatalog/Embedded_GPS_Module.html

But it's only a 12 channel receiver,

I would like to find a 20 Channel using the Sirf Star III chipset,

Anyone know where I might get one from?

Carl,

You've probably gone ahead and bought something but what I did was buy a GARMIN GPS35HVS - it's one of those GPS 'mouse' units. It attaches magnetically to the car and provides a wired connection (NMEA) to my iPaq. It has worked extremely well over the last 5 years and more. I wouldn't use anything else for automotive use. I looked at 'upgrading' to CF GPS card - but everybody told me you still need the external aerial to get good reception.

The GPS mouse unit is very robust and I always have at least 8 sats locked which gives more than enough accuracy to use with navigation s/w like TomTom which provide a s/w 'lock' onto a road. I have TomTom Navigator 5 (had 1,2 & 3 also)

Using it with OziExplorer CE and 1:25000 GB OS maps (scanned) it still stays on the roads. I usually use OziExplorer for off-road biking and hiking using a GARMIN GPSII+ unit. I don't need to have the iPaq on all the time - just switch it on to confirm location etc.
