I've just seen a magnetic holder on the www/globalpositioning.co.uk website which i'm interested in for my iPaq, as it's suction-mounted to the windscreen. I have a vw passat with "closing" vents, and dont want a vent-mount.
Does anyone have any experience with this magnetic holder? would you recommend it? does it require a strip of material to be stuck to the back of teh pda, or does it simply "cling" to the internal battery?

I haven't used a magnetic holder, but why not a vent mount ? I have closing horizontal vent mount slats on my Vectra 03 and all of the vent mounts from TheClip, Arkon, Seidio all seem to work very well. It does mean you can't close that vent, but hey, it still means my climate control can use it to pump out cold air.

Hi Dave,
hear what you're saying, but i wanted to keep the lines neat, and not have something permanent on the vent.
I've just sold my NavMan 3000, ready for the purchase of b/t gps, but have to say the mounting solution was great for me, just to the right of my steering wheel, up against the A-pillar, with the iPaq's bum resting on the dash.
I'm tempted to buy a new coverpak for the ipaq, and modify my old one by attaching it to a sucker mount of some sort. Most of the mounts i've found by searching cater for the iPaq WITH sleeves, not "naked". the "gripper" style ones would hold the naked iPaq, but the "clamps" seem to protude up too far, getting in the way!!!
Then the Brodit mount would be OK, they do one for a "naked" ipaq, but i'd still need to mount that somehow, so maybe a custom mod of a coverpak is what's coming. Perhaps if i do this, i'll have to send you pics to put up in the "readers mounts" section. Hmmm, best not go there!!
Actually, whilst i'm ranting, have you seen anything like TomTom's power solution for their new bluetooth gps, available elsewhere? i like the look of that, since it's a regular cigar-lighter plug, with with the 2 outlets needed to power both the GPS and the iPaq. AND it's a non-curly-cord, so easier to make a neat cable-trail!
I've just spotted a "retractable" ipaq car power solution on expansys which i'm tempted to go for, but something similar to TomTom's lead available seperately would be ace.
