Navigator 5 questions for newbie

I just got my TomTom Navigator 5 and have a few questions. The kit only came with a car charger. I plan to use it on my bike so is there a DC charger that is available. Also, it is possible to view the maps on the PC?

the car charger is a DC charger. Did you mean AC charger?

No, maps cannot be viewed on a PC except if you use the Microsoft Device Emulator (but that's just for developers)

Yes, I guess I meant AC charger - one that plugs into a standard outlet. How long will the GPS hold a charge?

depends on the model you have. Anything between 5 and 30 hours.

You can get a DC charger that connects to your bikes battery with a couple of crocodile clips and this has a cigar lighter at the other end, the power from this would be ok to run Tomtom plus a PDA then all you'd need is one of them magnetic bags with a waterproof clear top to put on you fuel tank so you can mount you TT+PDA where you can see it. I'm not a biker so sorry I don't know the proper names for these things but this is what a work colleague of mine does, I'll email him to see if I can get some details for you from him.

Disclaimer: Check polarity and voltage first, things may have changed

On my old style TT bluetooth receiver the voltage and polarity are the same as that of the iPAQ h4150 charger.

To add to what I said above the cigarette lighter adapter is available from Halfords and clips on to the battery under the seat.

My girlfriend's maxiscooter (Piaggio X9) has a cigar lighter fitted under the seat as standard precesely for charging devices like mobile phones and PDAs. The later model even has a cordless headphone system so that things like voice directions can be sent straight to your helmet.

Thanks for the replies but I am talking about a bicycle so I don't even have a battery. I just want to charge the unit from an outlet before riding.

Sure, and we did answer that question didn't we?

Have a look at Solar Panels, they can even charge your devices when you are on tour or away from a mains socket. You can even buy GPS receivers with solar panels now.
