Calculating the ETA

Does anyone have any idea on what basis a 635 updates its ETA.

Having just driven 1300 odd miles from Spain to the UK I did find the ETA prediction a bit strange.

I left my hotel at 6am on route to Calais just 250 miles away and after doing a steady 85mph over 20 minute period, my 635 was showing an ETA of 12am - which works out at an average of 40 mph. I know average speeds are difficult to maintain over a period of time but surely it could be a bit more accurate.

It gets it better towards the end of a journey but why is it so pessimistic to start with?
