I'd like to run my iPAQ/wired GPS completely independently from the car or lorry power supply.

Does anyone know a supplier for a 12V Li-ion battery in an external case with charger, that I can wire up to the cig lighter plug on the GPS harness?

Cheers

Nick

You don't need a 12 V power supply - why waste energy at the conversion to what you really need which is 5 V.

you get 5V out of 4 standard AA batteries - check your local electronics store for the appropriate case.

Nick,

If you look in the aviation software section of this site and the article ' GPS for the amateur pilot' you will find illustrations of both commercial and DIY 5 volt supplies.

The DIY version uses Maplin battery pack for four AA batts and a small plug/ socket combination used with a split standard power lead which retains the use for in car OR completely independent.
Took about 10 mins to make.
