TT5: Installation of maps makes my PC power off!!!

Today I set about upgrading TomTom on my Palm to v5.

The application was straight forward, but it went horribly wrong when I tried the maps.

I put in CD1, selected Maps and chose the GB+ map.. Realising that it was going to be slow going via Hotsync I chose to install to a Card Reader.

About 75% of the way through, there was a click and my PC powered off.. It didn't shut down, it was just like removing the power.

It looked like hardware and thought that it was an unfortunate time to have this problem.. Pulling the cover off, showed LEDs lit on the Motherboard, so the Power hadn't failed.. The only way I could get it to switch on was to pull the power for about 10 seconds and re-connect.

When it was up again, I tried again and at the same point, the same thing happened.

This must be more than a co-incidence.. It was clearly a software 'crash', but nothing like I had seen before, as it simply makes the PC power down.

I then blamed the card reader and next time installed to a 'folder' rather than a card-reader.. This time the install was MUCH quicker, but again, 3/4 of the way through, the PC powered off.

My next test was to try another map.. Still on CD1 I tried 'Benilux'.. At about 25%, the PC shut down again.

Wondering if the disk was corrupted (even though I wouldn't expect it to have this effect if it were), I draged-dropped the whole File-System from the CD to my HD and it was fine..

The only option I had left was to put the CD in my DVD Writer (rather than my reader).. At the same time, I also turned my Firewall off, just in case.

This time it worked....

Looks like a really nasty little bug is present in the installed.. But it seems to be very specific.. I hope that this doesn't affect anyone else!!

If it were doing it randomly then I might agree, but its in the same place each time.

The CD drive is used to read 100s of disks per week.. Data CDs, Audio CDs, DVDs, and there is nothing wrong with it.

The fact that I can read that whole disk using the SAME reader and I can do low level disk scans on the CD to prove that its not having a problem reading any bits from the disk.

I am a Technical Support engineer by trade whos job it is to debug VERY large applications, so I am not unfamiliar with 'software' and 'bugs'. I would bet anything that this is a bug in the installer, rather than hardware at my end!

It certainly is a bizzare crash and at first I would have sworn blind that it was hardware.. But after seeing it do it 10 or so times at exactly the same point, I am 100% sure that its software!

I am not saying that there isn't a combination of something (i.e BIOS, Drivers, software, hardware etc) at my end which is causing this, but its certainly not as simply as a faulty CD drive.

Can you reproduce the crash with CDs other than CD1? (The installer is present on every disc)

It happened with me too: same CD, same place. Fortunately I installed OK from my laptop - maybe a batch of faulty CDs.

I was going to try other maps/CDs when I get time, but I expect it to be the same.

Thanks Spook51, glad that I am not alone.

This is a REALLY nasty problem.. The way that it powers of the PC is so brutal, there is a real danger of file system corruption as a result.

I had my work laptop out ready to do the same as you, but fortunatly, I found that by changing CD drives (or switching off my Firewall) I was able.

I think that we had better raise this to TomTom.. Fortunatly, I am fairly clued up so was able to work around it, but I am sure that there are going to be other customers who run into this and end up paying a fortune getting their "PC fixed"!

I must admit that in all the years I have been involved in software installation, I have NEVER seen anything quite like this!

I agree, it was incredibly abrupt and now I think I may have a "your system has recovered from a serious error" issue; can't be sure as we've had an eight-hour party here today, brain is a bit woozy - will check tomorrow.

It's definitely not a CD drive failure but it was triggered by CD1 map install of GB Plus. I haven't yet tried to install other maps.

Same happened to me too in exactly the same way ! Crying or Very sad

Application loaded fine onto Ipaq RZ1710.

CD1 map disc computre crashed soome after starting copy to IPAQ via active sync. Also tried copying via a card reader same thig happened and copying to a folder on PC sae happened again.

Seems too much of a coincidensce for all our PCs to have a fault on them. Maybe its a software driver issue. I have a compaq presario desktop.

Took the discs round to a mates house who has an ipaq installed no problem first time.

I have now however managed to install another map via my PC. Maybe its just a first map install issue with certain PC configs.

I did speak to Tom Tom and they said I was the only one reported the issue ! Laughing Out Loud

up and running now tho' just hope I dont have to do a complete install again !

The most likely cause is a Virus on your PC or a corrupted Temporary Folder. The fact that rinkrat was able to install correctly on friends PC with the same disk seems to rule out the CD disk.

xda.. How is that "the most likely cause"..

In my case, simply using my other CD/DVD drive did the trick.. This isn't a virus problem or a corrupted temp folder, I would stake everthing I have on the fact that this is a bug!

You will probably find your CPU is at 100% utilisation during the copy to PDA storage card process, which can cause your CPU temperature to go very high for a prolonged period of time (ie 85C+ for over 20 minutes). To protect your CPU, the PC's BIOS will shut the PC down!

When copying, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and check the CPU % on the Performance tab.

This happens on my AMD3000+ CPU PC (running on a Asus m/b) whereas my Toshiba laptop is happier to run hot while the maps copy over so I use my laptop instead.

My PC does this for TTN3 and now also TTN5 maps.

I haven't spent any time researching or debugging the reason for the high cpu utilisation during the copy, but if I do find anything i'll report back.

NB that this happens to me on Win XP Pro SP2 with ActiveSync V3.8 or V4, and with everything else unloaded (ie no av or other utilities running).

An interesting theory but why should it never happen before (not even with TT3 maps for me, nor on any other occasion ever) and suddenly happen for several of us with TT5 maps - specifically the GB+ map?

But none of these theories carry any weight when you consider my origianl post.

In my case, I had the problem using my Pioneer DVD Reader.. As soon as I moved the disk over the my Pioneer DVD Writer, I installed the maps OK.

THats the same PC, hardware, OS, CPU, everything.. The only thing which was different was I read the disk on a different drive and turned of my Firewall!

It can't be CPU related.. I run my PC 24/7 and do VERY processor intensive tasks which go on for hours.. My CPU temp (and PC in general)is 100% stable.

Another thing to note is that I get the shutdown at about 75 for the GB+ maps.. Thats after about 3 mins when doing an 'Install to Folder', "10 mins when doing an "Install to card" and who knows how long when doing a "Install via Hotsync".. It doesn't fail after a certain 'time', but always in the same place.

Surely after so many people have seen this, people would start to agree that its simply some kind of bizzare bug???

I have asked TomTom to look at this thread in the hope that they will be willing to investigate this issue!

It is CPU overheating - I have the same problem, and everything goes away if I take the case off.
