Formula to visualize GPS coordinates to planary map ???

Hello friends,
I'm working on university project about GPS systems, involving writing an application for PocketPC receiving Lat/Lon (Geocentric) coordinates from the GPS device.
My question is: Is there a formula converting these coordinates from spheric to planary, so I can show the position on a plane raster map.

what datum is the map?

The map is in WGS-84 datum.

then you simply apply your rectangular (planar) measurements. The map will be normalised for both Lat and Lon.

Thanks alot Mr. Bendlin.
Another question just came in my mind, what to do if I dont know the datum, is there a way to calibrate the map?
Is it proper to use control point with known lat/lon coordinates and calculate the distance between this point and the one to be displayed.
I think there should be a better solution to such problem.
