ok, i ve read the forum for a month or two, and decided i didnt really need the 500 or 700. So how have i found the 300? Well, if you intend to add an POI such as the cameras, then, yes, start with a back up of the original SD card. 256 seems ample. First, may as well check you have the latest software, if not download that to start with.
I seemed to have quite a few problems getting the cameras and then the voices loaded successfully. The worst instance I had the clear the SD card, reload the Tomtom data, and start again. So lesson one is DEFINETLY work with a copy!
However once that was done, it was time to play. Its great having the battery, so you test without having to sit in the car, and so you can plan your routes at home in advance. But the devise is quite simply amazing. The route instructions are given twice-once in advance of the junction;again just as you arrive. And on the screen a green line shows you visually the appropriate exit. The instructions are so good, you would think someone had driven your specific route before and made notes for you.
Depending on the direction of the sun and its height on the horizon, you can get a bit of glare. But the device is definitely clearer when facing square to you. I suspect this means a remote for use by a passenger would be a bit useless, but maybe not.
Volume is excellent;in fact as it increases with speed it can be a bit of a shock when it suddenly shouts directions at you (if you were ever to drive above 70, of course).
Mount works well, but there can be a bit of adjustment to get the screen perfectly horizontal, as its irritating to see it a a 10degree slope! The unit is bit bulky to carry about if you dont want to store it in the glove box. in fact it barely fitted, and on my Jeep there isnt room for mount and the unit.
One point though, is that if you think talking on the phone while driving might increase the risk of an accident, then fiddling with your Tomtom is far,far worse. Stop, and make changes, before you kill someone.
One upgrade for the cameras would be if the gatso -facing away from you and the truvelo-facing towards- you speed camera were seperated , as you could then adjust the distance warning.
Otherwise, this is really outstanding. If you are wondering about one, stop wondering now; you ll be stunned how good this is.

I'm not surprised you found voice instructions so useful.... Laughing [/b]

Thanks for the report Gigm.

There's been an element of moaning, groaning and gnashing of teeth recently so it's great to hear from someone who is well pleased.

Like yourself, I'm a happy bunny with my TTG. It does what I want.

I too, have just purchased a TomTom 300, of which I am very pleased. There are of course faults with it, but these are mainly due to the mapping. However, the unit in my opinion is far better than the Navman ICN 635 for which it replaces. The user interface is far superior, and from experience it seem far more stable. The Navman used to seize up on a regular basis, and wasn't very intuitive to use.

Of course the Navman did have good points, but these were mainly cosmetic. These were namely the metal case and superior non-touch screen. It also had a higher price tag (a bad point), but as they both use teleatlas maps, their mapping is almost identical. I don't know if it is just me, but the TomTom does seem to give clearer directions and with better timing.

Just hope the teleatlas's mapping improves with time.

Finally, with everything that people are saying about reporting mapping errors, and the lack of inclusion in newer versions, is it really worth it?

small downside yesterday in that i tested the included POIs, restaurants, burger king, from home. After 300 yards it came up with a road that doesnt exist(doesnt exist in london according to the AtoZ either),then lept across 8 railway lines where there isnt even a road, to appear on the otherside of them 3/4 mile away, from where it routed you to what i think might be a housing estate.
Lucky i was sitting at home and not in the car, because even my 4*4 might have struggled with that route....
Not that it changes my opinion that generally it is outstanding. So maybe there are a few foibles with the mapping on occasion. If you cant live with that, but a map and shut up....
